Principal's Message
Kia ora and welcome to the end of a great first week back.
As previously mentioned, this is a very important term in which we not only get to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students in the Arts, Sports and Academics, but it is also the time in which we expect students to work and study hard and to bring a real focus and determination to their learning, progress and achievement. Junior Exams, including the Literacy and Numeracy corequisites commence in Week 4 and senior NCEA exams commence in Week 5 on Monday 6 November. See below for more details, including ways to support students in managing their stress and wellbeing.
Yesterday, we held the 10th annual WHSF Golf Fundraiser at Millbrook. The event was a huge success, as we had a sold-out field and enjoyed impeccable weather. Our sincere gratitude goes to Millbrook for their incredible support of this worthy cause. We also extend our thanks to all the WHSF Trustees and golfers who participated in making this day both fun and successful. Together, we raised nearly $40,000!
At the end of last term, we did some work on both the school’s Strategic Plan and also the Sports Strategic Plan. These have now been finalised, and you can find both below. Our strategic plans drive the direction and focus for the upcoming years and we thank everyone for their contributions to these important documents.
Next week we will hold a full-school assembly to announce the winners of the 2023 House Competition, to thank the 2023 Student Leaders, and to welcome and congratulate the incoming 2024 Student Leaders, including House Leaders. Additionally, we will be holding the first of our annual award ceremonies - our 2023 Sporting Blues awards.
A great newsletter follows, including a wonderful letter about our students who participated in the National Hillary Challenge Adventure Racing competition over the holidays and our Nouméa Immersion Trip, so be sure to have a read.
Ngā mihi nui,
Oded Nathan

Seniors - Tutorial Week and NCEA Exams
Tutorial Week begins on Tuesday 31st October and runs through until Friday 3rd November. Tutorial Week provides an opportunity for senior students to attend revision sessions with their respective subject teachers as they turn their attention to preparation for NCEA External Examinations.
Students have been advised that our expectation is that they are either in timetabled classes for tutorials, or offsite doing independent revision.
Senior end of year external exams begin on Monday 6 November, the NZQA Exam Timetable can be found via the link below. Students should have received a copy of their exam admission slip, this will detail each exam they are entered in and when these exams take place.
For a number of our students, performance in these upcoming examinations will determine whether or not they achieve a significant qualification. To that end, we strongly encourage students to use the resources below to prepare a comprehensive revision programme that covers the relevant course content for each subject.
NZQA Information and Preparation for Digital Exams
Students will be using the NZQA exam platform for their Digital exams. This will be the first time for the Year 11 students, they are strongly encouraged to familiarise themselves with the platform by utilising the practice activities and digital past papers. It is essential to ensure that students' devices are 'exam ready.' For a helpful guide, refer to the Digital Exams Student Checklist below.
Students must set up an NZQA learner login to access exam papers. Most students will have already completed this task. Within the MyNZQA learner portal, students can view results, apply for reviews or reconsiderations, order certificates, request a Record of Achievement, make general requests, and upload digital submissions for marking (new in 2024).
Junior Exams - Week 4 (30 October - 3 November)
Junior students have important end of year exams coming up in Week 4 of this term. A reminder that we schedule these to provide valuable exposure to formal exam conditions, similar to what they can expect from NCEA. These exams also provide an opportunity to review key subject material, consolidate understanding of important concepts and develop the resilience and self-management skills needed to navigate the challenges of NCEA successfully.
Year 9 students will be sitting three exams: English, Maths and Social Studies. Their other subjects will have summative assessments built into the remaining teaching and learning programme for the year.
Year 10 students will also be sitting three exams: English, Maths and Science. Likewise, their other subjects will have summative assessments built into the remaining teaching and learning programme for the year. Additionally, the NCEA Reading, Writing and Numeracy co-requisite exams will run during this time, though not all Year 10 students will be participating in these. We will be sending out more detailed information about these next week to students and their parents / caregivers, so please keep an eye out for this correspondence.
The exam timetable can be seen below: please note that wherever students do not have an exam scheduled they will be in their regular class (as seen on their Portal).
Subject teachers will be scheduling revision lessons in the leadup to these assessments, so every student should know exactly what is going to be expected of them. We do ask that as parents / caregivers you please support your student by encouraging them to set aside some time each evening and during the weekends to review their course work.
NCEA Pizza Nights at the Public Library
The QLDC Libraries are providing study space and free pizza on the 19th and 26th of October. Book yourself a space!
Branches Update
Branches Camp Workday 17 November
Today students were sent a form for their participation in the Branches camp fundraiser that has been running for over 15 years. It is a crucial initiative to help bridge the funding gap for Branches Camp. All students, whether going to branches or not are expected to use this day to raise between $70 - $120 in exchange for doing meaningful work in the community. Students can use an existing job to generate these funds, they can also seek out other jobs that also may be of interest to them for future vocation. In the event that students are unable to secure a job, the Branches Camp Trust is able to provide work for the day. It is very important that they fill out the form before Friday, October 20. Jane Bamford of the Branches Trust along with teachers will be following up with this process.
Other Information
Early next week students will find out whether they are allocated to Camp 1 (28 November - 4 December) or Camp 2 (5 - 11 December), this information will be posted for students in Google Classroom. Student availability has already been communicated (sporting commitments etc.). Mr Mac will be following up with students currently not intending to attend Branches next week and providing some options that may assist in their attendance at the camp.
As a reminder, a donation for the camp has been added to student accounts, but it is only a portion of the actual cost. Any contribution, even a partial one, is appreciated. If you would like to pay an additional student’s donation, you can do so by clicking on the following link. https://www.sporty.co.nz/viewform/254041

The competition was charged with high stakes and intense energy, with the announcement of the 2023 House champions at next week's full school assembly.
A Remarkable Debut for WHS Hillary Challenge Team
A huge congratulations to our Hillary Challenge team who finished 3rd at the National Finals! This is an awesome achievement for WHS’ first time attending the event, and gives the team automatic qualification for the 2024 finals. The team put in a lot of hard work in preparation for the event and performed well throughout an intensive 5 days of mentally and physically challenging tasks. Well done Pete Davis, Jude Deaker, Jess Hudson, Siena Mackley, Zara Mackley, Elsbeth Purdue, Tom Schenk and Seb Watson!A massive thank you to the incredible group of parents for their mahi behind the scenes, with a special shout out to team managers Richard Mackley and Ursula Davis for their support up at Tongariro. We also thank all of the organisations and businesses who have supported the team with funding, venue use, t-shirts, printing, produce and prizes. We are super grateful of the collective effort that went into this event from parents and the local community and very proud of the students' achievement. WHS is fast becoming one of NZ’s top adventure racing schools. Well done all!
We received a glowing letter of appreciation from Karl Domeracki, teacher and Hillary Outdoors Education Centre instructor, see below.
Nouméa 2023 - An Unforgettable French Immersion Adventure
In the waning days before the holiday season, an intrepid group of 27 Year 12 and 13 French students embarked on an unforgettable journey to Nouméa. This trip marked a significant milestone as it was the first overseas school excursion since 2019, making it all the more special.
For an entire week, these adventurous souls had an extraordinary range of experiences awaiting them. They were immersed in the rich tapestry of the French language while being warmly hosted by local French families. This allowed them to delve into the heart of French culture and truly experience the unique Melanesian way of life. From exploring a tiny island nestled in the world's largest lagoon to basking in the crystal-clear, inviting waters, their days were filled with exciting new adventures.
Thrills reached new heights as they embarked on a mesmerizing zip-lining escapade, soaring amidst the towering New Caledonian endemic trees. The students also had the honour of meeting the New Zealand ambassador and performing their school waiata.
To further enhance their language skills, they attended a local language school, solidifying their grasp of French in an authentic setting. It was an action-packed week filled with diverse activities and discoveries that made it feel like a journey far longer than just seven days.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated teachers who provided unwavering support throughout this adventure: Mrs. Duncan and Mrs. Denney. Thank you to Niki Davies from Xtravel for all her work behind the flights. Lastly, but certainly not least, a resounding 'merci beaucoup' to each student who participated. Your boundless enthusiasm, unwavering curiosity, and fearless willingness to embrace new experiences transformed this trip into an unforgettable and fantastique adventure. Your collective spirit truly made this a journey to remember, and it will undoubtedly serve as a cherished memory for years to come.
Merci beaucoup!!!

Students' highlights from the Nouméa trip
Going to Nouméa was an incredible experience. I loved getting to know my host family, exploring Nouméa, enjoying the sunshine, and practicing my French. Ruby Rose
This Nouméa trip has been the highlight of this year. Meeting my host family was a great experience and I'm lucky to have had them during this exchange. Ben Jordan
My favourite part of the trip was the homestay family because they helped us learn French culture and improve our understanding of french. Paige Jones
I loved sharing a great experience with great people. Mia Pagan
My favourite part about the trip was going out to the island- Sylvan Lawn
I'm 100% staying in contact with my host family. Everyone should experience that kind of culture shift. Trips like these are definitely worth it. Daphne Ricket
The whole trip itself was a once in a life trip experience but one my favorite part of the trip was definitely going to Phare Amedee. From snorkelling with all the different kinds of fish, to walking up the thousands of stairs to get to the top of the lighthouse and seeing the incredible view, but also the staff doing traditional dances, and can't forget going out on the glass bottom boat and seeing turtles! Jemima Mckay- Lund
In Nouméa, I learned that embracing new experiences and friendships can turn an ordinary trip into an extraordinary adventure. Tess Vermeir
My highlight of the trip was being at Phare Amédée island. There was so much to do like snorkelling, walking up the light house, watching the dancers at lunch or going on the glass bottom boat to see the coral and sea life. The views at the top of the lighthouse were so pretty as well. Phoebe Ide
Abby Fookes
My favourite part of the trip was the immersion, mainly going to the fantastic ice cream shop at Le Baïe de Citron. They were so kind and happy to talk to us in French about our trip, encouraging our whole group to speak and try to communicate our orders in French despite some of our terrible accents. Sara Warmington
I would say my top highlight would be the days spent at the beach and getting to explore Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons. I also enjoyed immersing myself in the host family's culture which definitely improved my French understanding and speaking. Ruby Dawson
My highlight was staying with the host family! My host parents were so kind and did everything they could to make me feel comfortable. I learnt so much from them! It was also so fun going with so many other people from the school because there was always someone to talk to. I made so many good memories. Georgia Chinn

Artist of the Week - Sara Warmington Year 12 Painting
Sara is a very thoughtful, self-motivated artist. Her art is true to her character.
“My art theme encompasses a journey through Central Europe, from the tops of the Alps down to the forests and the calm ponds of the flatlands. The paintings include old crumbling architecture that is so prominent in that part of the world. I have chosen it because it brings a calm, peaceful feeling that brings me happiness and joy. I have drawn inspiration from Monet, Van Gogh and Marcel Wibault as they have all shown the area and free brushstroke style I have always loved. I was also inspired by the movie The Sound of Music and the Austrian setting of the film, with the bright colours and panoramic views of the mountains.”
Play It Strange Album
The Cyber Hippies (Stefan Hall and Lincoln Reddell), Billie Carey and Jack Speedy have all been recording their songs at Sublime Studios for the latest Lion Foundation Play It Strange album. We look forward to the album release later this month.
