Principal's Message
Kia ora and welcome to the end of week 2, which was wrapped up today with our annual Breast Cancer Brunch in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. A huge thanks to the local businesses who contributed to this important cause.
Wednesday was an epic day at school as we began with a full-school assembly in Te Kirikiri in which we announced the 2024 Student Leaders, including Head Students, Lead Prefects and House Leaders. We also had an opportunity to thank all of the 2023 student leaders for all of their hard work and effort. See below for the full list of 2024 Student Leaders.
At the assembly, we also announced the winners of the 2023 House Competition - congratulations to Fox House, including their House Leaders Maisie Grufferty, Connor McIsaac, Ruby Ross and Harrison Rodgers. This will be the first time that Fox gets their name on the beautiful pounamu trophy that was gifted to us back in 2011. See below for the full results from the House Competition.
On Wednesday evening, we held our annual Sports Blues celebrations. The theatre was packed with student-athletes and parents/caregivers to hear about the amazing sporting achievements of our students from 2023. WHS students excel in sport at a local, national and international level in such a wide variety of sports. A huge thanks once again to all the coaches, managers, teachers, parents and supporters that enable these opportunities for our students. Our guest speaker Joe Latta spoke about the importance of having a strong work ethic and resilience and provided the students with great motivation to make the most of the opportunities that present. NZQA Information and Preparation for Digital Exams
Students will be using the NZQA exam platform for their Digital exams. This will be the first time for the Year 11 students, they are strongly encouraged to familiarise themselves with the platform by utilising the practice activities and digital past papers. It is essential to ensure that students' devices are 'exam ready.' For a helpful guide, refer to the Digital Exams Student Checklist below.
Students must set up an NZQA learner login to access exam papers. Most students will have already completed this task. Within the MyNZQA learner portal, students can view results, apply for reviews or reconsiderations, order certificates, request a Record of Achievement, make general requests, and upload digital submissions for marking (new in 2024).
Seniors - Tutorial Week and NCEA Exams
Tutorial Week begins on Tuesday 31st October and runs through until Friday 3rd November. Tutorial Week provides an opportunity for senior students to attend revision sessions with their respective subject teachers as they turn their attention to preparation for NCEA External Examinations.
Students have been advised that our expectation is that they are either in timetabled classes for tutorials, or offsite doing independent revision.
Senior end of year external exams begin on Monday 6 November, the NZQA Exam Timetable can be found via the link below. Students should have received a copy of their exam admission slip, this will detail each exam they are entered in and when these exams take place.
For a number of our students, performance in these upcoming examinations will determine whether or not they achieve a significant qualification. To that end, we strongly encourage students to use the resources below to prepare a comprehensive revision programme that covers the relevant course content for each subject.
Junior Exams - Week 4 (30 October - 3 November)
Junior students have important end of year exams coming up in Week 4 of this term. A reminder that we schedule these to provide valuable exposure to formal exam conditions, similar to what they can expect from NCEA. These exams also provide an opportunity to review key subject material, consolidate understanding of important concepts and develop the resilience and self-management skills needed to navigate the challenges of NCEA successfully.
Year 9 students will be sitting three exams: English, Maths and Social Studies. Their other subjects will have summative assessments built into the remaining teaching and learning programme for the year.
Year 10 students will also be sitting three exams: English, Maths and Science. Likewise, their other subjects will have summative assessments built into the remaining teaching and learning programme for the year. Additionally, the NCEA Reading, Writing and Numeracy co-requisite exams will run during this time, though not all Year 10 students will be participating in these. We will be sending out more detailed information about these next week to students and their parents / caregivers, so please keep an eye out for this correspondence.
The exam timetable can be seen below: please note that wherever students do not have an exam scheduled they will be in their regular class (as seen on their Portal).
Subject teachers will be scheduling revision lessons in the leadup to these assessments, so every student should know exactly what is going to be expected of them. We do ask that as parents / caregivers you please support your student by encouraging them to set aside some time each evening and during the weekends to review their course work.

STARS Graduation 2023
Last week we had the pleasure of presenting STARS graduation certificates to 51 Peer Mentors who completed the program this year. Well done and huge thanks to you all for your admirable and significant voluntary contribution in support of our year 9's transition into high school. Our Peer Mentors have certainly gained some significant leadership skills across the year. It's been such a pleasure to work with you all and watch the leadership learning and growth.
This year Peer Mentor training was intentionally delivered to our students by consistently encouraging them to show openness, honesty and vulnerability throughout this senior leadership pathway. This enables our student leaders to explore an authentic leadership style, promoting a culture that best serves our WHS environment and beyond, striving to maximise the health, safety and happiness for all our year 9's.
One peer mentor shared "leading with honesty has helped the STARS programme feel like a trustworthy place where we as students can make mistakes but grow as people and as leaders".
Thanks also to all our teacher teams involved in helping to embed STARS into year 9 programming, and to our STARS program sponsors for their ongoing funding. Bring on 2024 STARS! Well done everyone.

Year 13 Life Skills Session
On Monday, Hayley Stevenson from 'Housemart' was joined by MTF Finance, BDO Accountants and Employsure at WHS to talk to Year 13 students about all the things related to flatting, tax, kiwisaver, and short-term loans. The talk aimed to help school leavers prepare for life after graduation. The discussion covered:
- Housemart: Tenancy 101, what to know about flatmate agreements, where to seek help when things go wrong, the role of Citizen's Advice, and how they can assist students.
- MTF Finance: Afterpay and the risks of short-term finance.
- BDO Accountants: Tax and what students need to know, including their tax rate, and how secondary tax works.
- Employsure: Employment contracts
The goal of this session was to equip students with valuable knowledge about their next stage in life and offer local contacts for those who may need help in the future. WHS would like to give a huge shout-out to these amazing businesses for offering their expertise and supporting our students' futures.
Girls who Grow - Lunch & Learn
On Wednesday some of our lovely year 10 girls attended the "Girls who Grow Lunch & Learn Experience". The day was a tremendous success in the sunshine of wonderful Central Otago. They visited Hemp Central to learn how Hemp is being converted into products for the building industry, such as bricks and insulation batts. The girls brainstormed ideas with scientists from Otago University and Canterbury University about Genetic Biodiversity, Soil Science and Food Sustainability. The next visit was to Moreish Kitchen caterers to understand how events are planned and high quality raw food is prepared and presented. The culmination was a visit to New Zealand's only fossil free orchard- Forest Lodge Orchard (recently on Country Calender). The girls had a fantastic time learning about how to espalier cherry trees, and learn how solar panels provide the electricity for frost fighting, spraying and the vehicles for orchard management. They even got to drive the only electric tractor outside of the USA!! Our girls were particularly grateful to our sponsors at GWG - One Good Kiwi, Future Farmers, Wilkins Family Farm.

Artist of the Week - Daniel Wright
Daniel is a Year 12 photography student who creates stunning photographic landscapes. He was pushed out of his comfort zone this year and has outdone himself. Below Daniel shares a bit about his theme.
“My panel aims to show the scale at which nature surrounds us with often unobserved patterns and symmetry, from a leaf’s veins to the reflection of mountains in a still lake. My work is inspired by photographers such as Trey Ratcliff, Charlie Waite, Mark Grey and David Noton. I admire how their photos use bright colours and create symmetry through naturally occurring patterns in our environment. I have also taken this concept a step further and digitally manipulated some images to create unnatural symmetry.”
