Principal's Message
Kia ora and welcome to the end of another really good week at WHS in which our great all-round education was on full display. Our Musical rehearsals are gearing up with opening night of ‘Hairspray’ on 3 April. Tickets are now on sale through our website or you can click here. Summer sport is heading towards the business end of their season and last weekend, our rowers defended the Bell Trophy, as the top rowing school in the South Island. Be sure to have a look through the Arts and Sports sections below for a full-wrap.
This past week, I had the privilege of walking around the school to observe teaching and learning in action. I was really pleased to see high quality teaching and learning across all learning areas within the school with very high levels of student engagement. See below for our teaching and learning model that outlines what we want teachers to focus on in their classrooms. With only five weeks left in the term, and just 20 school-days remaining, students need to maintain a high level of focus and rigour with their studies, both in class and at home.
Our Year 9 Greenstone Camps continue through the weekend and into next week. Students have been great, demonstrating our key values of inclusion, responsibility and resilience. I also need to mention all the Year 12 and Year 13 Stars Peer Mentors, who have been supporting students on the Camp. We really appreciate their active citizenship and their contribution to a great school-wide culture. A huge thank you to the owners of Greenstone Station who allow us to stay on their land for nearly two weeks. Also, the camp couldn’t occur without the support of our staff and contractors, who ensure students are safe both physically and emotionally. See below for photos from Duncan and Fox House camps.
A few weeks ago, Ava Boyt was selected to attend the 65th London International Youth Science Forum 2024 (LIYSF), a great achievement and one that hasn’t been achieved by a WHS student for a few years. Congratulations to Ava!
There has been a fair amount of discussion in the community about the growth of the high school and I want to reiterate that from a WHS perspective, the growth is not unexpected or unplanned for. We track and monitor roll growth in the Primary School’s so that we can plan 7 to 8 years in advance, and we make and have made changes to our systems and structures accordingly. An example of this is our Kaiārahi model in which every student and family has a key point of contact and that every student has a ‘champion’ who can guide and support them with their education and holistic development throughout their school. The kaiārahi model is scalable so that as we grow, the Ako Groups stay at a ratio of 1:20. Similarly, the number of teachers that we employ and the number of classes that we run are scalable and this year, similar to years past, and in large part due to the WHS Foundation, we have average class sizes of approximately 23 students. These numbers are well below what the MoE appropriates and are just a couple of examples of what we do to try and ensure that all students are well supported with their wellbeing, learning, progress and achievement.
As mentioned above, there are only 20 school days left in the Term. Please support your student to be organised and planned as this can really support their hauora and wellbeing over what will be a busy and dynamic second half of Term.
Once again, a huge thanks to Charge About Queenstown for lending me their cargo e-bike to commute to work during the Aotearoa Bike Challenge, what a wonderful set of trails we have in the basin. A great and full newsletter follows, so be sure to have a read through to hear more about WHS’ great all-round education.
Ngā mihi nui,

Ākonga Passport Update
All juniors are well underway gaining points towards receiving their Ākonga passport awards this year which supports our Ākonga or graduate student profile in the junior school. To acknowledge the broad all-round student development, points are being accumulated through a range of activities such as participation in house events, demonstrating school values, having great Learning Engagement Indicators on reports and taking part in some of the many extracurricular activities on offer. Something that is worth noting is that students have the ability to gain recognition for activities such as sport/service or leadership outside of school also. To do this students can collect a form from student services and return this there. These activities will accumulate points towards their Akonga passport.
Bronze Passport = 15 Points
Silver Passport = 30 Points
Gold Passport = 50 Points
Student involvement with the extra-curricular life of school plays a vital role in the holistic development of students; something integral to the Ākonga Profile. Additionally, extracurricular activities offer students an opportunity to connect with their peers and the school and is especially important for students new to WHS, therefore as a school, we set the goal for all students new to WHS, including Year 9s, to get involved with an extracurricular activity.
Students have already had the opportunity to experience our Extracurricular Expo providing the opportunity to see and register for one or more of the amazing opportunities on offer at WHS. You can Click here for the full list of opportunities and contact details that have been on offer. If your student is not involved with an extracurricular activity yet or has not yet registered for an extracurricular activity, please discuss the importance of doing so, and students can email staff now to register.
A couple of things to look forward to next term:
- A prize draw for those who have reached at least the Bronze level in a special junior assembly
- Badges for those students who have gained a specific Passport level
We look forward to celebrating junior students’ achievements with their Ākonga Passports this year.

High Quality Teaching and Learning
At Wakatipu High School one of our key strategic priorities is to deliver high quality teaching and learning to every student - so that they engage, progress and achieve in all their classes. The teaching and learning model outlines the guiding principles for high quality teaching and learning at Wakatipu High School. It is underpinned by current research on what matters most for learners and their learning.
At the centre of the model is our Ākonga Profile. The three areas work interdependently to support learners to develop their capabilities for lifelong learning, their holistic development, and to leave with their best possible qualification.
While today’s article is an overview of the model, subsequent articles will provide more detailed information about each of the areas in the model.
Classroom teachers have been focused on developing Whakawhanaungatanga at the start of the year to establish a class climate that is conducive to learning. This involves developing:
Care and Connectedness: inclusion, belonging, relationships of mutual respect.
Challenge: rigour and high expectations.
Consistency: predictable interactions and predictable expectations.

Geography Fieldwork and Canyoning Highlights
A key component of our geography courses is to collect primary data from the field. Year 11 Geography students were given the opportunity last week to carry out their data collection. On Thursday students travelled to the Sam Summers track where they investigated and measured aspects of the 12 Mile Creek and Delta. The purpose of this research was to consider how a local awa changes between its upper, middle and lower course.
On Friday students then had the optional opportunity to explore the awa by going canyoning. Canyoning Explorers accommodated our students on this experience. This was an action-packed day in and out of the water. Students descend and explore the canyon by zip line, abseiling, waterfalls, slides, plunging into natural pools, floating down narrow passageways and cascading down chutes – all in stunning natural surroundings. The students enjoyed a change of classroom. “Both of the trips were really good but the canyoning was definitely a highlight. The trip on Thursday extended our geography skills and the canyoning gave us the opportunity to get further into the river to explore as well as challenge ourselves and have fun” - as stated by one of our geographers.
A special thanks to our additional staff, Craig Morrison and to Stefan Crawford & the Canyon Explorers team for providing an awesome experience outside of the classroom.

Ngā Reo Languages Area - A World of Opportunities
There has been significant progress in the Ngā Reo Languages since the beginning of the year, marked by the introduction of innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing students' fluency in language production but also having students developing a passion for learning languages.
Visits to Te Hoeroa
Senior Te Reo Māori students have recently embarked on a series of enriching excursions beyond the confines of our Kura, venturing to Te Hoeroa. Guided by the expertise of Matua Ned and supported by the Mana Tāhuna team, these weekly visits have provided invaluable opportunities for students to deepen their understanding and proficiency in Te Reo Māori and Te Ao Māori.
Weekly vocabulary/grammar challenge in Languages
Junior and senior language students across all classes now engage in a weekly homework challenge designed to expand their language vocabulary and grammar. This initiative uses platforms such as Education Perfect, Duolingo, or Memrise, providing students with opportunities to enhance their language skills beyond the confines of the classroom.
At the end of each week, students partake in a brief 10-minute evaluation session. This evaluation helps students reinforce their learning, identify areas for improvement, and provide teachers with insights into their progress.
Upon the conclusion of each term, students will receive an average grade, expressed as a percentage, derived from their weekly evaluations.
Parents of language-learning students are encouraged to inquire about their child's progress with their weekly tasks, which not only support their learning but also contribute to the success of this innovative initiative.
Meeting with the local and global community
An additional initiative this year involves inviting both local and global community members into the classroom to share about themselves using the language students are learning.
In this interactive session, students will engage with the guest by asking multiple questions in the target language, allowing them to practice their language skills while gaining valuable insights.
If you are fluent in any of the languages taught at school (Te Reo Māori, Japanese, Spanish, and French), or if you know someone overseas who would be interested in participating in an online interview, please reach out to Mr. Guillaume Charton, Head of Languages: gcharton@wakatipu.school.nz. Your participation and support are greatly appreciated in enriching our students' language learning experience.
Interview of Damien Blanchon - Responsible of Airbus plane deliveries
Last Thursday, our Year 11 French students embarked on an extraordinary journey as they engaged in their first-ever live online interview with a special guest from Toulouse, located in the picturesque South West of France. Throughout the captivating 30-minute session, students had the privilege of getting to know Damien, who graciously shared insights into his life.
Damien offered fascinating glimpses into his role as an employee for Airbus , responsible for overseeing plane deliveries across the globe. Moreover, he provided personal anecdotes about his family, his hometown, and the rhythm of his daily life. This unique experience not only allowed students to practice their French language skills but also provided them with a meaningful opportunity for genuine conversation and cultural exchange.
Japan Trip 2024 - First meeting of the year
Sensei Juliette Cooke met with her Japanese students last Wednesday to go through the logistics around this exciting trip which will see students flying to Japan at the end of Term 3. In Japan, students will further develop their confidence in speaking Japanese and will embrace the amazing Japanese culture.
Tuakana - Teina
Another great activity was led by the Year 10 French students on Thursday afternoon. Questions with regards to food, likes and dislikes were asked and answered for by the juniors to the seniors (Year 12 and 13 French students).
‘Bouncing’ for Excellence – Year 12 Physical Education
The Year 12 Physical Education students are currently embarking on a programme that will enable them to apply selected Biophysical Principles while attempting to learn and develop a Trampoline Trick at SITE. The Trampoline facility SITE is hosting the practice sessions for this process and all students are enjoying the opportunity to experience this unique and challenging activity. Students’ abilities range from beginner/novice status to high performance in terms of skill levels they are exhibiting, however, as the goal is to learn a trick, all students will experience some form of success as they progress through the teaching, learning and practice programme. A big thanks to SITE for their coaching and assistance in this great learning activity.
WHS Student Shines in Dog Agility Scene
Year 11 student Jess Wilkinson, is making waves in New Zealand's competitive dog agility world. With remarkable consistency and skill, she has achieved a top 7% finish on 14 occasions, including three wins making her one of the youngest in New Zealand to achieve this with a dog trained by a junior handler.
Weekends find Jess competing with her team of dogs, with her top dog Zoom recently earning both agility champion and jumpers champion titles in just 2.5 years—an incredible achievement in the sport.
Celebrations for such victories often involve dousing the handler in cold water, but when Jess and Zoom secured both titles on the same day, it called for an even bigger splash, including ice.
Competing against seasoned adult handlers hasn't deterred Jess; she stands as one of the few youth handlers to reach such high levels of success.
Looking ahead, Jess is set to compete in the champ of champs classes at the upcoming nationals, likely to be one of the youngest competitors in these esteemed categories.
Jess's story serves as an inspiration in the agility community, showcasing talent, perseverance, and a drive for excellence. With her determination and skill, she continues to raise the bar for herself and others in the sport. Congratulations on your success Jess!
The Readers' Cup: Expressions of Interest
The Readers' Cup is a reading competition designed for Year 9 students. Teams of four students read a set of six books, and then compete against other school teams at the Southland regional competition in Invercargill (Monday, 24 June - Week 9 of Term 2) to answer quiz questions from these books. This challenges students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team, and continue developing a love of reading.

The WHS Musical needs sponsors!
Our musicals are fantastic shows with wonderful opportunities for many of our students, and because of their popularity they provide a great opportunity for the community to support our students.
Musicals are, however, a significant undertaking and we appreciate support from the wider community to ensure they happen at the level we aspire to. One way for this to occur is through sponsorship from businesses and/or families. There are various tiers of sponsorships and advertising opportunities detailed in this document.
Please contact me if you wish to be a sponsor or advertiser or have any queries at scooper@wakatipu.school.nz many thanks in anticipation!

School Policies and Procedures
Did you know that all the WHS policy and process documents are accessible from the school website and a link to these can be found here: Policies and Processes (The username and password to access the site are on the same page.)
WHS leverages a platform called SchoolDocs and the link will take you to this site. There is a great search function on the left hand side that allows you to enter key words and it will bring up all the related policy documents. There is also a review function. In the "Current Review" section you will see all the policies that are currently under review and who is able to input into them (see screen shot below).
Please bear in mind that policy and procedure documents are usually fairly high level, additionally the content is often dictated by regulatory or legislative requirements, so, whilst all feedback will be reviewed, not all feedback will necessarily be included.
