Principal's Message
Kia ora and welcome to the end of another fantastic week at WHS.
The week began with the celebration of our student's achievements from the first half of the year at our Junior Mid-Year Prize Givings and our Senior Excellence/Ad Alta awards. Our students strive to achieve to the best of their ability and it was wonderful to see so many students crossing the stage and also to have so many parents there to celebrate and congratulate them on their achievements. See below for a list of students who received an award.
On Tuesday, we held our Course Option afternoon, and again, it was great to see so many students and parents in attendance for this day to get subject information and advice and guidance on their 2025 options. A reminder that all students returning to WHS must complete their Option Selection through SchoolPoint by 10 am on Monday 12 August.
Next Tuesday 6 August, no classes will be running to enable all parents and students to meet with their respective Kaiārahi. We expect all parents and students to attend these important meetings to discuss students' learning, progress and achievement and overall engagement at school. This could also be an opportunity to discuss students' options for 2025. Please use this link to make an appointment if you haven’t already done so.
This week saw the formal launch of our SASH (Students Against Sexual Harm) group. This crucial initiative has the aim of increasing the awareness of and reducing sexual harm among teenagers. Our student leaders have been working with our Guidance and Senior Leadership team for nearly a year on this important initiative that was begun by ex-students Billie Carey and Elise Edmonds in 2023. Sexual harm and sexual violence are, unfortunately, far more common than any of us would like. The SASH group, along with their allies and with the support of the school and local agencies, have compiled a range of information now available on our website. See below for more details and a huge thank you to the students who are seeking to make positive change at school and in the community.
A full and comprehensive newsletter follows that once again highlights the amazing opportunities and achievements of our students in Academics, Arts, Sports, Outdoors, Leadership and Service. It also showcases the amazing support we have from the community through said opportunities and scholarships. A huge thank you to everyone for their ongoing support of the school and it's students, it is certainly humbling to live and work in such a wonderful community.
There are a number of great events happening this weekend, including lots of Sport and Art so whether it’s the 1st XV rugby game on Saturday at 12:45 at school, the Showing Off Exhibition at Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown or the Jazz Band Fundraiser at Te Atamira on Sunday afternoon, be sure to get out and about and have a fantastic weekend.
Ngā mihi nui,
Oded Nathan

Next Steps Meetings 6 August - not too late to register
As per our email to parents this week, our important Next Steps meetings are being held next Tuesday 6 August for all students and parents throughout the school day. If you have not already done so, please use the link here to book a meeting with your student's kaiārahi. These 15 minute interviews with student-parent and kaiārahi provide a very important opportunity to discuss your student’s academic progress and engagement with school.
If your kaiārahi is Mrs Price or Mr Shawcross, they are doing their meetings on different days, and these can be booked using this link.
There are no classes running on this day to enable these important meetings to take place. Students will study at home and come in with their parents for their meeting. Students are not required to wear their uniform to these meetings.
If your student requires supervision at school for this day please email cmorrison@wakatipu.school.nz and we will arrange for your student to be supervised in the library.
We look forward to seeing you all at next Tuesday’s Kaiārahi Next Steps meeting.

Course Option Selection
The course option selection process for 2025 continued this week with the option afternoon running on Tuesday this week.
Information regarding the 2025 option selection process, including detailed information on the range of course options on offer, is now available through our website. The instructions on how to log in and submit the option selections can be found here.
Additionally, parents and students are invited to make an appointment with a member of the Senior Leadership Team to discuss course options for 2025 and beyond. Appointments can be made here.
A reminder, the selection of 2025 course options needs to be completed by 10.00 am Monday 12 August. If you know your Year 9 - 12 student is not returning in 2025 please complete the leaving form here: Leaving Form (Year 13 students do not need to complete this).
Senior School Exams (Thursday 15 August - Tuesday 20 August)
The Year 12 and 13 School Exams are coming up in weeks 4 and 5 of this term. While they don't directly contribute to NCEA credits, they are a very important opportunity for students to revise and then test their understanding of course work covered to date. Additionally, in the event of a student missing any of their final NCEA external examinations, the school exams are used to determine derived grades.
Here is the link to the Term 3 Senior School Exam Timetable, as well as a presentation on achieving "High Performance" in examinations that could be discussed at home.
Students will also be provided with access to further information around how to study effectively during Ako Time over the coming weeks.
Also, a reminder that on Monday 19 August there are no classes running that day and students will be studying at home. The only students requried at school on this day are those Year 12 and 13 students who have exams. If your student does require supervision on this day, please email cmorrison@wakatipu.school.nz.
Year 11 students do not have exams at this time, and any practice exams that they have will be conducted during normal class time. Their teachers will provide them with ample preparation time for these.
Students Against Sexual Harm
Hello from Students Against Sexual Harm, otherwise known as SASH. We are a collective of students from Wakatipu High School dedicated to increasing awareness of and minimising sexual harm among teenagers. Our mission through this student-led initiative is to promote an understanding of consent, educate fellow students on its significance, and connect them with relevant information and support resources should they need them.
This week we introduced an information hub to promote our initiative. It was located in the foyer during the second break, Monday to Friday. This has been a very popular initiative with lots of students keen to support as an ally and find out more. This was great to see as it gets the word out to promote positive consent and encourages impacted students to reach out for support. This week has been very important to promote the change we are looking for. By raising awareness, we eventually hope to reduce the amount of sexual harm within the school.
Our website is up and running (www.wakatipu.school.nz/sash) and worth checking out for more information about SASH and accessing resources.
SASH will:
Raise awareness surrounding sexual assault and consent.
Collate and provide information surrounding support following sexual assault.
Help students seek support, and help them understand what options they have.
Provide safe contacts and local organisations, both inside and outside of school, including services that are free of charge.
Input into school curriculum around consent and sexual harm.
By raising awareness and educating people on sexual assault, we hope to be able to eventually stop sexual violence that is often normalised and prevalent in our culture. Giving both those affected by abuse, and their supporters, as much transparency around who they can contact, what help is available, and specific processes, can hopefully help them find some clarity and choice about how they would like to proceed.
SASH won’t:
Counsel students.
Tell a student what they should do. We will have commonly asked questions and provide access to people who can answer any questions we can’t. We are not trained professionals, we are simply students working to create change.
Please note: If a student did disclose an event to a SASH member, that member would be required to seek advice from a WHS guidance counsellor.
Thank you for your support, and look out for our students representing SASH by wearing our purple SASH pins around school.
The SASH Team

Outdoor Education Mountain Expedition
Our Outdoor Education students are truly embracing the challenge! The Year 13 students have been honing their skills on an overnight mountain expedition at the Remarkables. Following the storm this week, students are facing temperatures as low as -15°C with wind chill with incredible resilience and determination.
Students Support Winter Warmer Community Event
Last term, eight Year 11 students, who are taking part in the Central Otago Youth Employment Programme (COYEP), supported the Winter Warmer at St Margaret's Presbyterian Church run by Enliven, Age Concern and Alzheimer's Society. Students were able to volunteer their time to support the event by greeting attendees, giving them raffle tickets, making and serving cups of tea and cake. The students had a great time and were able to achieve credits towards their NCEA Level 1 while supporting this community event.
Event organiser Gayle Thornton had positive feedback for the students saying "Huge thanks to the boys - working with seniors can be daunting for young people but they kept their cool and just rolled with it!" This experience has led to further opportunities to collaborate with these Community Organisations in the future, so watch this space!
New Zealand Physics and Mathematics Competition (NZPMC)
On Saturday, 27 July, three WHS students went to Christchurch to compete in the NZ Physics and Mathematics Competition Finals. Brian Yang, Oliver Turner and Leo Delvin (all Year 10) qualified in the top 55 out of a total of 800 South Island high school students who competed in the first round of the NZPMC. It was a fun experience, getting the chance to compete alongside the best South Island secondary school mathematicians and physicists, and afterwards we were able to experience the University of Canterbury's clubs expo and see a few of the different projects they had been working on (one of which included trying to set a New Zealand record for a human powered vehicle!).
Thank you to the parents who helped out with transport and the staff members who prepared the event. Hopefully we qualify again next year!

Year 10 Student
House Basketball
The House basketball competition is in full swing! This week, the girls battled it out with another thrilling final that saw Arthur take the win over Duncan. The comeback is on for Duncan! Next week, it’s the seniors’ turn to battle it out for House supremacy.
Sport and Active Recreation News
Alice Robinson Visit
A huge thank you to Wakatipu High School alumni and alpine ski racer Alice Robinson who popped by to speak to some of our student-athletes on Friday morning. Alice has had an incredible National and International career to date, finishing on ten World Cup podiums and attending two Winter Olympics - including PyeongChang 2018 as a senior student. It was a great opportunity for our students to hear how Alice balanced school, friends and sport during her time at WHS, stays motivated even during off days, and the highs and lows of high-performance sport. Her final advice to the students - dream big. Even if your goals might sound ridiculous to say out loud, you have to be ambitious and believe in yourself to get there through hard work. So aim high.
Rugby - Otago Country Reps
Congratulations to Hagen Brown, Rihari Hollebon, Tama Kopa, Lucius Lockhart, Tevita Ratulevu and Charlie Rule who have been selected into the Otago Country U16 Boys Wider Squad!
Ice Hockey
Congratulations to Aoife Orr who has just been selected in the New Zealand Ice Fernz Trans-Tasman team (the New Zealand women’s senior team) for the first time! This is an incredible achievement. Aoife has already represented New Zealand twice in the U18 team overseas at World Championships. On top of this, Aoife has also been selected to go and live in Toronto, Canada for two months this summer. During this time she will be sponsored to train and play ice hockey at the Toronto Leaside Wildcats which is the biggest women's ice hockey club in the world with 2000 players. This opportunity was made possible by the ongoing relationship between New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation and the Toronto Leaside Wildcats. It is an amazing chance to improve her ice hockey and get valuable game time and high level training. There are two other New Zealand players going. Several Wakatipu High School ice hockey players have also done this exchange before. Well done Aoife!
Mountain Biking
Year 11 student Indy Deavoll is currently in Canada, where she competed in her first Crankworx Whistler. Indy placed 3rd in Air Downhill and Dual Slalom, and 4th in the 1199 Downhill and Pump Track. These are great consistent results in a hugely competitive field. You can follow along with Indy’s mountain biking journey via her athlete instagram @indy_deavoll

Anderson Lloyd in Schools
Anderson Lloyd in Schools – rangatahi mana ako
Anderson Lloyd were excited to bring their Anderson Lloyd in Schools internship to Tahuna
Queenstown following its successful implementation Ōtepoti Dunedin last year.
The purpose of the programme is to provide mentoring and a paid work experience internship to
a student in any of the areas that interest them in order to gain valuable work and life experience
in a supportive and encouraging environment. This internship also provides financial support for
further tertiary study.
After a comprehensive and competitive interview process, where all candidates showcased
exceptional talent and capability, Anderson Lloyd warmly welcomed year 13 student Peyton
Dickson to the firm. Anderson Lloyd were impressed by how Peyton consistently demonstrated
the firm's values throughout her time with them and are excited to see where her future takes
her.
Here is what Peyton had to say about her al. in Schools internship:
Over the past 10 weeks I have had the incredible opportunity to be an intern at Anderson Lloyd.
This experience has taught me what my life could look like if I chose to go down the path of
being a lawyer.
I learnt how to write emails professionally and send them to large groups, which was exciting
and empowering. I was lucky enough to have the unique opportunity to spend one-on-one time
with lawyers who have different specialties, from Corporate Commercial to Litigation and even
Resource Management. This was definitely a highlight for me, as it helped me see what being a
lawyer could mean from a range of different lenses.
I was also given project work. This was to write an article called 'A day in the life of a junior
solicitor.' This meant that I got to interview four junior solicitors and ask them why they chose to
be lawyers and their highlights and lowlights. I contributed to the firms Matariki communications
and celebrations, by conducting research and creating a quiz. I also got to be a part of some fun
office banter.
This internship hasn't just developed my technical skills, it has also been filled with moments of
laughter and inspiration. It has sparked a passion for law and helped me to gain a better
understanding of what I want to do when I go to university, all while being surrounded by a
passionate group of supportive people.

Adverse Weather
With winter well and truly here this piece is regarding ‘adverse weather’. The most important point to note is that again this winter in the case of adverse weather we will communicate through the following channels:
- To parents - via the WHS SZApp (see below if you don't have it on your device) and the WHS website
- To students - via normal school email
On a morning with adverse weather (which particularly includes snow and/or ice on the roads) we liaise with QLDC’s roading contractor and the school bus coordinator and make a decision regarding school for that day. If it is not a normal school day, the common options are either a delayed start or school closed, in which case we will communicate through the channels above, endeavouring to do so by 7:15 am.
Please note that if we do get adverse weather during the day we will not normally close the school - this is primarily because school buses are not normally able to run early. However, we do monitor adverse weather and conditions very carefully and make decisions and communicate accordingly, through the channels above.
Please also note that we do liaise with the other schools in the basin and decisions are generally coordinated. Although sometimes conditions vary for different schools and some primary schools do not have school buses - which are a key consideration, and ultimately each school will need to make its own decision, which will be communicated by the individual school.
WHS SZ App
All parents, caregivers and students should download the SZapp to your device as this is how we will communicate urgent and important school alerts and our weekly newsletter. We have two Catalyst Kōrero coming up in August…
Reprogramming our immune system to treat disease, Monday, August 5
Reprogramming an individual’s own immune system to target and destroy blood cancer cells is already an accepted and successful treatment over the ditch, with a second trial now happening at NZ’s Malaghan Institute.
And the use of immune therapies for other cancers, autoimmune diseases or serious infections is on the horizon.
Our August 5 Catalyst Kōrero will explore the scientific approaches behind different immune therapies, their successes and their challenges, with Associate Professor Emily Blyth and Dr Alicia Didsbury.
Both are experts in CAR-T cell therapy, which many in our community are supporting local girl Meila Davis to undergo in the US.
Monday, 5 August, 6 - 7:30 pm at the Liger Leadership Academy, 34 Grant Road, Five Mile shopping area. Registration required HERE to ensure your seat. Koha (cash at the door or deposit to the account on the registration link) will be given to the Queenstown Cancer Society.
The complex Middle East context of the Gaza war, Sunday, August 18
More than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed and 70% of residential buildings destroyed in Gaza in the Israeli retaliation for Hamas’s October 7 attack, when some 1200 Israelis were killed and 240 hostages taken.
The potential for this human catastrophe to spread was illustrated, again, with a rocket attack on a football ground in Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, killing 12 on Sunday.
Israeli authorities blamed Iranian-backed Hizbollah, who “categorically denied” the allegation. And Israel’s military on Thursday killed a Hamas leader in Iran and a Hizbollah senior commander in Beirut in retaliation.
University of Otago politics researcher Dr Leon Goldsmith, who has spent much time in the Middle East, will outline the political and historical context that provides the complex drivers of this conflict – and its “very real scope” for expansion across the region.
Sunday, August 18, 6 to 7.30 pm at The Rees Hotel Queenstown’s Ruma Wai Kahu on the fifth floor. Registration required HERE to ensure your seat. Koha (cash at the door or deposit to the account on the registration link) will be given to Médecins Sans Frontiers/Doctors Without Borders for their work in the region.
