Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou katoa and welcome to the end of another really good week here at Wakatipu High School, in which WHS’ great all-round education was on full-display.
Our Year 12 and Year 13 school exams concluded on Tuesday and it was great to see all the students back at school on Wednesday. The school exams provide an excellent opportunity for students to practise studying, consolidate their learning from the first two-thirds of the year, and to practise ‘performing under pressure’. Achieving well in external exams is something that takes practice and determination, and with final exams beginning in November, and there only being 6 school weeks before end of year Prizegivings, the school exams signal the time for students to ramp up their study and start preparing. Results from exams will be available by Friday 6 September, at the latest.
On Monday, our teacher only day was used to upskill teachers with the explicit teaching of structured literacy, focused on writing skills and structures, including the Single Paragraph Outline (SPO). It was a useful and important day for teaching and learning, and we are making good progress with our upskilling of Structured Literacy practice. While we were pleased to see that a good percentage of Year 10 and Year 11 students have achieved their literacy and numeracy corequisite exams, there is still more work to do, and students need to continue developing their numeracy and literacy skills both at school and at home. Be sure to check the Portal and if your student has not yet passed one of the three corequisites, see below for some supports that are available, all of which were published last week.
In the sporting arena, last Saturday I had the privilege of watching our Senior Girls Netball team surge back from quite a deficit to win the local netball competition for the first time in 7 years. A huge congratulations to them and their coaches. On Monday, our Senior Boys Basketball team won the Central Otago competition giving WHS a clean sweep of the CO comp, winning the Senior Boys A and B grade and the Senior Girls A and B grade. Congratulations again to all the players and coaches. Yesterday was our annual sports exchange with Mt Aspiring College, which was played with great pride and energy and ended up in a hard fought draw (see below for full set of results). The number of extracurricular opportunities on offer at WHS in the Arts, Sports, Leadership, Academic, Cultural and Service simply couldn’t happen to the extent that it does without the amazing support from parents and the community. To all those who help facilitate these opportunities, we can’t thank you enough for your time and effort that you give each week and year.
As per the last few newsletters, planning for the 2025 academic year is well underway, including that all students option selections should now be complete. We now start to roll out our 2025 student leadership opportunities, including student representatives on the Board of Trustees, Head Students, Lead Prefects and House Leaders, more details will be in the Sunday email out to students.
Be sure to read through the newsletter, which includes a few final reminders for the following:
- Parent Evening - Consent and Care on Thursday 29 August
- Whānau Hui - next Friday 30 August
- Health Consultation Survey - closes on Monday, 2 September
- Branches Evening - for all Year 10 parents/caregivers on 11 September
- Cultural Blues and Sports Blues Nominations are open now.
With the days getting longer and spring fast approaching, puffer jackets will not be permitted to be worn at school from Monday 2 September. Students should find their jerseys and wear these under their blazer on cold days.
Please be sure to have a read through another comprehensive newsletter and have a fantastic weekend.
Ngā mihi,
Oded Nathan

Students are able to practice previous assessments via the NZQA website - click here.
2024 Health Education Consultation Survey
The Education Act requires schools to consult with the community at least once every two years about how the school will implement its Health Education. We would appreciate it if you could please click the link below and complete the Health Education Consultation Survey.
Health Education is taught to every student in Years 9 and 10 at Wakatipu High School as part of the broad base of the NZ Curriculum. For year 9 and 10 students, Health Education is integrated with Physical Education and students will complete one semester of this in Year 9 and a second semester in Year 10. Students will learn about relationship and sexuality education, decision making skills around a variety of relevant youth health issues as well as resilience building skills. Level 4 and Level 5 of the NZ Curriculum for Health and Physical Education will be covered, details of which can be found here.
It should be noted that in addition to the above, a parent has the right to request that their child is withdrawn from any aspect of the Relationship and Sexuality Education programme component of the health curriculum. Details of this process are provided to all parents in advance of the teaching and learning associated with the Relationship and Sexuality Education unit.
Our Health Education programme extends into the senior school as students can choose Health as an optional NCEA subject for students in Years 11, 12 and 13.
There are also a range of other in-school programmes used to deliver Health Education to students, details of which will be made available to students and parents.
Please click this link to complete the 2024 Health Education Community Consultation Survey.
This Consultation Survey will close at 9 am on Monday 2 September, after which feedback will be discussed with any changes to the Health Curriculum outlined to all parents, caregivers and students.

Have you got what it takes? - Year 12 Physical Education ‘Get up and Go’ week
Monday 26 August - Thursday 29 August
There is no doubt that participating in physical activities is good for your overall well-being (hauora). The benefits of being physically active throughout your lifespan are numerous. Physical activity or exercise can improve your health and reduce the risk of developing several diseases like type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Physical activity and exercise can have immediate and long-term health benefits. Most importantly, regular activity can improve your quality of life.
While many young people are involved in sport or recreation activities, the number of young people involved in physical activities is certainly decreasing at an alarming rate.
The Get Up and Go Week is a programme that aims to encourage people to get up, get active, and give things a go. This year, the Year 12 Physical Education students are embarking on an intervention programme whereby they work as part of a group to choose, plan, and implement a physical activity event/opportunity as part of Wakatipu High School’s Get Up and Go Week.
Let's go! See you all NEXT WEEK!
