Principal's Message
Kia ora and welcome to the end of a great week at WHS.
The school’s vision for sport is to ‘grow better people through sport and active recreation’ and this week more than 160 students participated in the nation-wide Winter Tournament Week (WTW) across multiple sports. WTW represents the pinnacle of the winter sports season and provides our student-athletes with the opportunity to excel and perform under pressure. I had the privilege of spending Tuesday afternoon in Dunedin where I got to watch our senior Ice Hockey teams, junior basketball teams and senior girls football perform at a very high level and with great character. Feedback from the coaches, parents, teachers and volunteers was that our students performed well and consistently demonstrated the school’s values of Respect, Resilience and Inclusion. Please see below for the full slate of results and a huge thank you to the coaches, teachers and volunteers who make these opportunities possible.
On Monday, applications for our 2025 Student Leadership positions closed. Once again we have had an outstanding quantity and quality of applications for these prestigious positions. A big congratulations to everyone who has put themselves forward, you are all to be commended. We begin by selecting our Head Students and Lead Prefects, after which the House Leaders are selected. This process will run through to the start of Term 4.
With only 3 weeks left in the term, a reminder that students will need to be focused on their learning and will likely need to be ramping up their revision programmes, especially seniors who have lots of internal assessments and exams commencing in five school weeks. With that in mind, our Senior Subject Next Steps meetings are being held on Tuesday 17 September, with school finishing at 1:50 pm. Bookings are open now, so be sure to set up your meeting times accordingly.
Today we held our annual Breast Cancer Brunch. There is always an amazing display of food to support such a worthy cause, and this year was no different. A huge thank you to all the businesses who donated their goods and thanks to the Community & Service Council for their organisation.
Though springtime weather can be quite variable, we are asking students to now put away their puffer jackets when at school and ensure they are wearing their blazer (and jersey, if cold). It’s been great to see students wearing their uniform with pride and thanks to our parents/caregivers for your support with this.
There are quite a few key dates to note on your calendar, please see below. Another fantastic newsletter follows, including outstanding achievements from Cooper Breen, Tom Schenk and the Jazz Band, so please be sure to have a read.
Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend.
Ngā mihi nui,
Oded Nathan

Year 12 and 13 School Exam Reports
The recent senior school examinations have now been marked and grades entered on the Portal for students and parents to access. To make it as straightforward as possible for parents to review their student's performance in these exams we will be sending out a summary PDF this evening via email.
For clarity, the recent exams do not count for credits, rather they are an indication of how much a student knows and understands on a topic by topic basis. We strongly encourage students to review their exam results and then make a plan moving forward for how best to address any gaps in their understanding so that they can achieve their best possible results in the NCEA External Examinations in November. Attending the senior school next steps interviews on Tuesday 17 September would also be beneficial. Details for this can be found in the next article in this newsletter.
In the unlikely event that a student is unable to sit these exams, then their school exam result will be sent to NZQA for a derived grade.
Senior subject Next Steps interviews
Senior Next Steps will take place on Tuesday 17 September, 2:15 - 7:30 pm. With school exams behind us and the academic year fast coming to a close, Senior Next Steps are an important opportunity for parents and students to connect with individual subject teachers to discuss student progress to date, and next learning steps. In some cases, the conversations may relate to current projects / internal assessments. In other cases, the conversations may be more targeted to preparation for external examinations. In either case, Next Steps provide a final chance to clarify what a student needs to do in each subject to ensure they achieve their full potential.
For some students who are struggling or underperforming in one or multiple subjects, we have already notified parents and invited them to book appointments to see the relevant subject teacher(s).
Bookings are now live for everyone to access, via the link below.
Cosgroves Engineering Scholarship
Celebrating Tom Schenk - Cosgroves Engineering Scholarship Winner
We are delighted to announce that Tom Schenk has been awarded the Cosgroves Engineering Scholarship for 2024.
This scholarship recognises Tom's natural Mathematical ability, his dedication, and passion for problem-solving. His teachers describe him as “autonomous, self-motivated, and someone who sets high standards for himself”. Valued at $2,500, the scholarship supports Wakatipu High School’s aspiring engineers wanting to pursue a university education in New Zealand.
One of the key benefits of this scholarship is the opportunity it provides for valuable work experience. Tom will have the chance to gain practical insights and mentorship as an intern at the Cosgroves Christchurch office over the summer. With a team of over 40 staff members, this office offers an ideal environment for learning and growth, with the potential for even more exciting opportunities beyond the internship.
The Cosgroves Engineering Scholarship is awarded to students studying Civil, Electrical, Fire, or Mechanical design engineering, which are core areas of expertise at Cosgroves. Tom will be pursuing engineering at Canterbury University, and we are confident that he will continue to excel and make us proud.
Breast Cancer Brunch
A big thank you to the Community and Service Council for hosting our annual Breast Cancer Brunch. It was a great success, thanks to the generosity of Balls and Bangles, Oh Fudge, Bakers Lane, Bidfood, Ma Boulangerie, the home bakers and New World, as well as everyone who got involved today to support breast cancer research.
University of Otago Junior Mathematics Competition
The University of Otago Junior Mathematics Competition is for students in Years 9, 10, and 11, and assesses Mathematics, logic, literacy, and problem-solving skills. The competition has been running annually since 1985 and takes place in Terms 1 and 2. This year, 26 Wakatipu High School students participated in the competition. Impressively, ten students received Merit Awards, and a further six students received Distinction Awards, putting them in the top 15% of participants nationwide. Mahi pai!
Merit: Anna Argyle, Jack Barlow, Josh Harris, Isla McGlynn, Justin Pelayo, Solomon Phoon, Oliver Turner, Brian Yang, Rilee Young, and Tianyou Zhang.
Distinction (pictured): Oscar Childs, Leo Devlin, Dylan Lelievre, Hector Tanner, Cameron Hall, and Matthew Winstone.

Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition
The Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition gives students the opportunity to develop their problem-solving skills through algorithmic thinking. The competition incorporates unique ‘three-stage tasks’ that encourage students to develop informal algorithms and apply them to test data of increasing size or complexity.
Eight Wakatipu High School students participated in the CAT competition last term. Dylan Lelievre in Year 10 received a Distinction Award, which means he placed in the top 15% of partipants! Additionally, Haru Kuroe, Ayuna Miyoshi, Oliver Turner, and Brian Yang, and Adele Necasova all received Credit Awards (top 50%). Congratulations on these fantastic results!

Parenting in the Basin: Consent and Care
The second Parenting in the Basin series, ‘Consent and Care’ was held on Thursday the 29th August. This informative event offered a valuable opportunity for our community to engage in meaningful discussions about sexual harm, healthy relationships, and online safety.
Key members of the SASH team—Evie Snow, Mia Pagan, Bethany Graf, and Ted Coutts—shared their mission to raise awareness and reduce sexual harm among teenagers. They introduced their online information centre, which connects local resources and support services in an effort to demystify the sexual harm reporting process. Their successful SASH Week at Wakatipu High School saw them gain over 200 allies, and they are working on a documentary to provide further insights into seeking help for sexual harm.
Dr. Kathryn Smith, a medical doctor specializing in sexual assault cases, delivered an impactful presentation focusing on healthy relationships, consent and the impact of social media. Constable Amanda Shute from Queenstown Police provided an in-depth overview of the legal aspects related to sexual harm, offering critical information for both parents and students.
Vicki Patton, head of the Guidance Team, then explained the school’s guidance support system and confidentiality policies. She outlined the process for reporting concerns and seeking help within the school environment, emphasising the difference between a teacher’s obligations in comparison with guidance counsellors, when disclosure occurs.
Students can expect confidentiality, respect and compassion. We may ask who else knows. Students can access ongoing counselling at school if they wish. We can also help you make a request, if needed, to support them to stay away from the person who assaulted them.
We will ask if students want to see:
- A specialist doctor
- Central Lakes Family Services (CLFS)
- ACC counselling services (free)
- The police

Key Messages for Parents
Encourage Open Dialogue: Parents are encouraged to engage in open conversations with their children about consent, relationships, and online safety. These discussions are crucial for helping children understand their rights, responsibilities, and the importance of mutual respect in all interactions. Click here for some tips and tricks.
Utilising Resources: Several valuable resources were highlighted, including Netsafe and Central Lakes Family Services. These organisations offer support and guidance on managing online risks and addressing sexual harm. If you are unsure where to start, talk to one of the members of our Guidance Team.
Online Vigilance: Parents should be vigilant about their children’s online activities and discuss the potential consequences of sharing intimate images. Teaching children about consent from a young age, including asking permission before sharing photos, is essential for promoting safe online practices.
Consent Education: Integrating lessons on consent into everyday conversations with children is crucial. Ensuring that they understand the concept of consent, respect for personal boundaries, and the difference between real-life relationships and media portrayals will help them navigate their social environments responsibly.
The evening received fantastic feedback from the parents in attendance and we would like to thank the experts that continue to support our students and whānau. Together, we can foster a safer, more informed community for our young people.

Spring Planting Season
The Whakatipu Reforestation Trust is a 10 year old charitable organisation in Queenstown that has been planting trees and increasing biodiversity since 2014. Even though the Whakatipu Reforestation Trust is a relatively new group, they’ve managed to plant well over 70,000 plants in the basin making huge progress towards their goal “to create wildlife corridors that will, in turn, attract native birds, lizards & invertebrates back into the basin, significantly enhancing the biodiversity of the region”. Already, increases in native birds and invertebrates at their keystone sites show they’re making great progress. Every planting season, they invite the public to participate in their community planting days at their keystone sites. Community planting days are drop in with snacks provided. Details are as follows:
- Saturday, 7th September - Whitechapel Reserve (9am-12)
The Whitechapel site has been around for several years now and this planting day will add an extra 1500 plants to the site. There’ll also be a BBQ to celebrate the start of the planting session so be sure to attend.
- Saturday, 14th September - Lake Hayes Pavilion (9am-12)
Lake Hayes has seen much restoration in recent years and this Lake Hayes Pavilion site is just one example. 1500 plants will be put in the ground this season.
- Saturday, 21st September - Slope Hill Recreation Reserve (9am-12)
Slope Hill Recreation Reserve has been a site of much interest and activity in the past years with Mana Tahuna making amazing progress towards its restoration. This season, an extra 1000 plants will be planted.

Additionally, the Quail Rise Community will be holding another planting day at Jim’s Ways. Morning tea will also be provided but please bring a shovel and gloves if you have them available.
- Sunday, 8th September - Jim Way Reserve (from 9am)
Registration at the apple orchard with 3 free pizza vouchers from Francesca’s Mobile Pizza to be won. Check the Quail Rise Facebook page on Saturday night in case of last minute changes or cancellations.
250 plants all donated by the Whakatipu Reforestation Trust
By participating in these planting days, you’re not just planting a tree—you’re contributing to restoration and growth that will benefit generations to come. Join in, get your hands dirty, and make a lasting impact on the future of our environment.
