Principal's Message
Kia ora and welcome to the end of Week 5,
Participation Day last Friday marked the end of our ‘disruption free’ start to the year, in which we endeavour to settle students into school and class time routines. With our school photos earlier this week, Geography trips in the latter half of the week and our Year 9 Greenstone Camp commencing next week, Wakatipu High School’s great all-round education has started to move into full-swing.
On Wednesday we held a full-school assembly in Te Kirikiri to announce the winners of this year’s Participation Day. The opportunity to come together as a whole school are few, and it was great to be able to acknowledge the House Leaders and students who showcased our values of Inclusion and Respect. A massive congratulations to Fox House who won Participation Day in 2025 (see more below).
Following our review of our school-wide Health curriculum in 2024, students, in particular, were very clear that they wanted to see the school do more to support their wellbeing. In response to that, next week, we are launching our school-wide Wellbeing Programme with a ‘Voices of Hope’ assembly. We are looking forward to hearing from Jazz Thornton and Genevieve Mora, as they share their message with our students. This will be followed up with a comprehensive wellbeing unit in Ako time, in which all students will create personal wellbeing plans and have access to a range of resources that will allow them to improve their understanding of wellbeing and how to support their wellbeing when times get tough.
As we approach the mid-way point of the term, students should be well settled in their classes and developing good study habits and routines. Seniors will have set their goals for the year and these will be shared with parents/caregivers next week. With the Internal Assessment Calendars now published (see below), senior students should have created their own assessment calendar so that they can plan the term and year ahead. Both the goals and the assessment calendars provide parents and caregivers the opportunity to support their children to ‘reach for their heights’.
It’s also really important that students and parents continue to monitor their weekly Learning Engagement (LE) reports. If students are getting 2’s or 1’s, we strongly recommend that they get in touch with their teacher to discuss the changes that need to be made to student engagement. It should be noted that the LE reports are not an indication of academic achievement, and that as we progress in the term, parents and students need to be checking the Portal for progress and achievement grades, which indicate how students are progressing academically.
Another fantastic newsletter follows, including the complete list of student council representatives, our kapa haka wānanga, more information regarding Greenstone Camp and our school-wide Wellbeing launch, a visit from Dr Max Irvine (MIT Professor), important information regarding vaping and much, much more - so be sure to have a read!
Hope everyone has a great weekend and all the best to those participating in the Motatapu.
Ngā mihi nui,
Oded Nathan
Principal/Tumuaki
2025 Student Councils
Congratulations to the following dedicated ākonga on their appointments to the Student Councils! We look forward to seeing the positive contributions you will make to WHS this year.

Participation Day
On Wednesday morning, the entire school gathered in Te Kirikiri to hear the results of Participation Day. Fox House claimed the victory for 2025, scoring 11 out of 15 points and winning The March. Congratulations to Fox and all the students for their enthusiastic participation on the day, which wasn't just about points and fancy dress. More importantly, it was about kotahitanga - inclusion, and participation - taking part, and encouraging as well as supporting one another. The House leaderboard shows Duncan in first place, closely followed by Fox, Hay, Mackenzie and Arthur. House leaders and Deans should be extremely proud of the day and their efforts. Well done!

Year 9 Greenstone Camp
Greenstone Camp starts early next week, and I just wanted to follow up with a few final details. On Monday, the Greenstone Staffing Team will be heading into the Greenstone flats to set up infrastructure – tents, cooking facilities, and to check the river flow. It's always great to return to this stunning area.
We are expecting some mixed weather conditions over the duration of the camp. It's not unusual for temperatures to drop to freezing or reach 30 degrees, so it's definitely important to be prepared for all conditions.
To ensure students are ready for the camp, please double-check packing lists (see below) and ensure they attend any pre-camp meetings. Keep up to date with all the latest updates on your student's Greenstone Google Classroom page, where you'll find essential information and any weather-related updates.
The camp dates for each House are as follows:
- Camp 1: 4 to 6 March – Arthur students
- Camp 2: 6 to 8 March – Duncan students
- Camp 3: 8 to 10 March – Fox students
- Camp 4: 10 to 12 March – Hay students
- Camp 5: 12 to 14 March – MacKenzie students
Parents and caregivers can find more information about the camp at the links below.

NCEA Level 1,2, and 3 Internal Assessment Calendars and WHS Term Calendar
Internal Assessment Calendar
The internal assessment calendar provides the due dates for all internal assessments being sat by students throughout the year for each course in Years 11-13. We highly recommend that students note the dates of their internal assessments on their calendars and plan their term and year accordingly to ensure their academic goals are achieved. Kaiārahi and parents are encouraged to support this.
Students should use the assessment and school calendar to identify all their assessments - particularly noting pinch points when several fall due at the same time, and then put this beside their other commitments eg sport, work, family and plan accordingly.
These calendars are live and will be updated regularly.
Level 1 NCEA Assessment Calendar
Level 2 NCEA Assessment Calendar
Level 3 NCEA Assessment Calendar
WHS School Calendar
The WHS School calendar is always jam-packed and is a feature of WHS' great all-round education. As such, we want students to be looking at the calendar and understanding when they are going to be away for any school related activity. The calendar linked below can be used with the NCEA Internal Assessment Calendar (above) to assist with planning for the term.
Students Catching Public Buses
We are aware that the ORC managed public ORBUS service currently has some capacity constraints at peak times. The start of the year is often a little challenging with the bus system as differing volumes of students start and stop utilising the service. We strongly encourage students to plan ahead, knowing there is congestion, and catch a bus earlier than might be required based on the bus timetable in order to get to school on time.
We understand that ORC is aware of the congestion and is reviewing, in the meantime it is up to students to manage and plan so that they can arrive at school by 9am each day.
Autumn Uniform Requirements Reminder
It has been pleasing to see so many of our students wearing their uniform with pride and making an effort to follow the uniform requirements. This sets a positive tone at our school and creates positive interactions with staff who are complimenting rather than sanctioning their uniform choices. Unfortunately, there are still a few students who are not wearing their uniform correctly and now is a timely point in the year for them to reset and get organised for the cooler months ahead. Students can expect staff to be insisting on them meeting uniform expectations and following up where these are not being met.
Click here to see the requirements and here for the visuals of the correct uniform.
Girls uniform
It is important to note that the girls’ winter uniform, which is the kilt and tights, must be worn as shown in the picture. If the blue summer skirt is being worn, this is with blue ankle socks only. No tights can be worn with the summer skirt please.
The Blazer is compulsory
This is the compulsory ‘primary’ garment. It must be worn to and from school and during the school day. Students may remove the blazer whilst in class or when active during break times. The blazer must also be worn to all formal school events, such as assemblies. If you are wearing the school jersey, this must be worn underneath the blazer.
Non-uniform items
Hoodies, even school insignia hoodies, are not to be worn at school during the day. They will be confiscated and can be collected by the student at student services at the end of the school week in the first instance but will escalate if these items are continually worn.
Socks
White socks are never OK to be worn with the uniform and should not be worn, even under trousers. The blue school socks can be purchased at the school uniform shop.
Shoes
Must be: plain; all black (with no coloured logos); be made of polishable material (i.e. not canvas, but may have a rubber toe-cap); have a low or no heel; be shoes, not boots or ‘high tops’ or sandals. They may be lace-up or slip-on, with no buckles.
Boys with shirts untucked
We ask our boys to wear their shirt tucked into their trousers and shorts where practicable. Being active at break time is of course one place where this would not be enforced. Consistently ignoring requests to do so may result in them receiving a detention for consistently ignoring instructions.
Āwhina support for uniform needs
There is support available for students and families for whom accessing uniform is a financial barrier. We encourage you to seek support through our Āwhina Support Fund which can be found here. The in-school WHS Uniform Shop is open weekdays 8:30am- 3.00pm (term time) for our students for most needs.
Our system for addressing uniform issues has been clearly and consistently communicated and we really appreciate parents/caregiver support with ensuring students are wearing their uniform consistently well to school.
We are hoping that students are able to get themselves well organised in the next week and look forward to your support in ensuring your child is clear on the need for wearing their uniform correctly and with pride.
Ngā mihi

Kapa Haka Wānanga

I tēnei wiki, i wānanga Ngā Ara Wai mō te wā tuatahi.
On Wednesday, we had our first gathering of Ngā Ara Wai rōpū, a combined kapa haka consisting of secondary schools around the region joining Wakatipu High School including Mount Aspiring College, Cromwell College, Dunstan High School, and Roxburgh Area School. This group is working towards competing at Te Hautoka, the Regional Secondary Schools Kapa Haka competition in Dunedin later in the year.
After a short pōwhiri and some whakawhanaunatanga, we jumped straight into learning a new bracket composed by some of the kaiako of Ngā Ara Wai, Whaea Candace Carroll and our very own Matua Hutana Maxwell.
One of our Head Students, McKellar Thornton and Jentie Newell who leads the Māori and Pasifika Student Council said of the day, "Today was a challenge but through the resilience and wairua of our new group, we finished the day with strength and the future of an amazing group in sight. Seeing this rōpū come to life was a dream come true for many of our rangatahi, who have been requesting a similar kaupapa for many years. Ngā mihi nunui ki ngā kura atu mō tō haerenga. Karawhiua e te whānau o Ngā Ara Wai!"
Year 9 Readers' Cup: Expressions of Interest
We are now accepting expressions of interest for the 2025 Readers' Cup competition.
The Readers' Cup is a reading competition designed for Year 9 students. Teams of four students read a set of six books and compete against other school teams at a competition in Invercargill (at the end of Term 2) to answer quiz questions on these books. This challenges students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team, and continue developing a love of reading. WHS has done well in these competitions in the past: our 2022 and 2024 teams won the regional competition in Invercargill and represented the region at the national competition in Auckland (our 2024 team placed fifth nationally). Transport to Invercargill for the competition at the end of Term 2 will be organised and provided by the school, and there will be a transport cost for parents. It is a significant commitment and involves quite a bit of reading, working collaboratively with others, and attending break-time / after-school training sessions.
If your child is interested in participating in the 2025 Readers' Cup, they can express their interest via this form (the form will close on Monday, 3 March). We will hold trials in Week 7.

Year 10 and 11 University of Otago Trip: Expressions of Interest
Following the success of our Year 10 and 11 University of Otago trip last year, we are taking expressions of interest for the 2025 trip, which will take place at the end of Term 1. The trip has a focus on Science and Technology, with the trip involving visits to the Marine Science Centre in Portobello, the School of Surveying, and St Margaret's College hall of residence.
Students can express their interest in going on the trip via this form. Expressions of interest need to be submitted before Wednesday, 5 March. The approximate cost will be $180 per student. You can apply for the Āwhina Fund if the cost is a barrier.

NZ/ Swiss Exchange: Sabine back and almost Swiss!
Sabine Edmonds, Year 12 French student, just had the most amazing adventure in Switzerland over the holidays. Not only did she get to soak up the French language, but she also got a firsthand taste of Swiss culture (yes, that includes fondue).
At the start of the year, she shared her incredible trip with our Year 10 French students, proving that learning French isn’t just about conjugating verbs—it’s your ticket to epic experiences. Here are a few of her words and photos to inspire your own adventures!
From Sabine: I recently came back from a 2 month exchange in Switzerland during the summer holidays. I did this to improve and practise my French in real life scenarios. I was fortunate enough to live with a family whose house was located a 5 minute drive direct to the ski lift so I got to experience a proper Swiss winter. Their house was built by their granddad making it rustic and completely Swiss. School was definitely the hardest part of my exchange considering it was all in French (and too much in German as well) and 8 hours long. It was the complete opposite of my schooling experience in New Zealand because the teacher would talk for the entire 45 minute block lessons. Because of this I really came to value Wakatipu High School.
It was really difficult at first to settle into a new family, school, and language but after a little over a month I started to feel more and more comfortable speaking to people and making mistakes. To achieve that I had to go through almost a mute period for about a month because I was so scared of looking stupid. It did take me a while but I think I gained a lot of confidence and managed to make lifelong friends who I still keep in contact with now and a second family. Since I did a whole French immersion I was able to improve on my French hugely and now don’t feel stressed talking in French to someone. I was so amazingly lucky to have the grandma take me to different places around Switzerland and got to visit Bern and the main chocolate factory in Switzerland. As well as developing a new language I got to build on my independence. I visited Lausanne by myself and had to sort out the trains in French. I also managed to lose my phone in Switzerland meaning I had to be fully present in every conversation and couldn’t just hide away, I actually think that was awesome for me, but not for my insurance company.
Though, now back in Queenstown I realise I am really missing my $1 croissants from the local supermarket.

Year 13 Parents Information Evening
On Thursday night we ran our first "Year 13 Parent Information Evening". This covered key information with the aim of working together to support the best possible final year of high school for our Year 13 students. Topics covered included both school information (qualifications, assessments, events, reporting etc), along with some great careers and transition information (different options post secondary, what happens at school across the different terms, costs and financial information, scholarships, work experience, career advice etc). We concluded by going through some key contacts to get support for Year 13 students for wellbeing, health, and school. This session was recorded for any parents who were unable to attend, or if you are a parent of a younger student and are curious about how this all works and can viewed via the link below.
If you have any questions please contact either your child's Kaiārahi, Dean, or our wonderful head of careers - Mrs Linda Richards.
Sport and Active Recreation News
Mountain Biking
There has been plenty of mountain biking action over the last couple of weeks. On Sunday the MTB National Championships (Supported by ACC New Zealand) were held in Rotorua. Wakatipu High School has several students make their way to the North Island to compete. Congratulations to the following students on their top 4 placings.
- Noah Evans - 3rd U15 Male
- Lewis Laird - 4th U17 Male
Also on Sunday we had 15 students compete at the Otago/Southland School MTB Champs at Cardrona Bike Park. Conditions were a little more favourable than on Saturday when the race was supposed to take place (with temps down to -7!). Congratulations to the following students who took home the medals:
- Quinn Ravenwood - 1st Intermediate Boys
- Moby Molgat - 3rd Intermediate Boys
The Crankworx Summer Series was held in Christchurch from Feb 13-16th. There were a few students who got involved in the action-packed festival, where local and international riders took on world-class courses. Congratulations to the following students:
- Angelo Decadi - 2nd U15 Male Pump Track & Downhill
- Quinn Ravenwood - 5th U15 Male Downhill
Athletics
Congratulations to Siena Mackley and James Weber who competed at the 1 Mile Open New Zealand U20 Championships on Saturday in Christchurch. Siena placed 3rd in the Women’s event, with James coming in 4th with a new PR. Incredible results!

Equestrian
Year 10 student Zara Hazledine has had an extremely successful show jumping season - winning three National Series titles last Sunday in Christchurch. Zara was awarded Winner of the South Island Mini Prix Series with her horse Dingmac Demoiselle (Demi). Zara was also awarded Winner of the South Island Grand Prix Series on Redcliffs Bill (Bill). These titles are based on points gained from placings over 24 show jumping events held in the South Island between September and February. It is an incredible achievement to be the overall winner of one of these series, let alone take out both the Mini Prix and Grand Prix! Zara rounded out the day by also winning the National Series Cat C Pony High Points for Show Hunter with Demi. Well done Zara!
Congratulations also to Kendra van Leeuwen and Cuba Cuba who placed 2nd in the Open Horse 1.20m and 3rd in the Junior Rider 1.15-1.25m class at the Canterbury Champs.
Dog Agility
Congratulations to Jess Wilkinson and her dog Zoom who earned their Jumpers Grand Champion title over the weekend. This title is a culmination of 3.5 years competing together as a team. In order to gain the title Jess and Zoom had to finish in the top two on 20 occasions (with at least 10 required to be wins) - at the top level in open competition. Jess is one of the youngest competitors to gain this title in the history of Dog Agility in NZ, an incredible achievement. It is tradition that when a competitor gets this title that their fellow competitors give them a 'wetting'. For Champ, this involves water, but for Grand Champ extras are allowed. Jess was the lucky recipient of ice cream, BBQ sauce, coffee, milk, grass, iced tea to honour her achievement. Well done Jess!

Water Skiing
Water Ski Champions! Wakatipu High School students took out the 2025 Otago-Southland Secondary School Water Ski Champs last weekend - etching our name on the Don Mackay Memorial trophy for the first time. The Champs were held at the Bannockburn Inlet on Sunday 23rd February with 31 skiers from across Southland and Otago. Five WHS students competed in the Novice U16 categories with their placings enough to take out the overall team score. Congratulations to the following! A huge thank you to the Otago Water Ski Club for hosting a great event.
U16 Novice Boys
- Eddie Doyle 1st
- Quinn O'Donnell 2nd
- Flynn Cutler 4th
U16 Novice Girls
- Zoe Thurston 3rd
- Miko Agnew 5th
Swimming
Mark Lauko and Finn Henderson spent last weekend swimming at the South Island Long Course Champs. It was a massive 3 days of racing with heats in the mornings and finals at night. They both achieved some great results and achieved lots of top 8 placings. Well done Mark and Finn!
- Mark 13/14 yrs : 400 IM - 2nd, 200 IM - 4th, 50 Breast - 5th, 200 Breast - 5th, 100 Breast - 6th.
