Principal's Message
Kia ora and welcome to the end of Week 7, which was another great week at WHS.
WHS vision is to deliver Aotearoa New Zealand’s best all-round education, and that vision was on full-display throughout the week. On Monday, our Visual and Performing Arts students went to Invercargill for the annual Showquest and Toi Wearable Arts. On Wednesday more than 100 students went to Invercargill for the annual sports exchange with James Hargest College. Closer to home, preparation began for our annual Matatū (Haka/Waiata competition), the 3v3 girls basketball competition was in full flight, and our kapa haka rōpu performed at ‘Haka Tū, Haka ora’. Our student fire brigade and active citizens made the front page of the Mountain Scene and our Head Girl Manuella Sanches Pedrosa spoke eloquently at today’s Women in Leadership Conference. This weekend will be just as busy, with students engaging in the 40 Hr Famine, performing in Rockquest and participating in a range of other sporting, outdoor and extracurricular pursuits.
Additionally, this week we held our mid-year subject examinations for Year 9 and 10 students. I was pleased to see our students give their best effort with these exams which are an important part of school life. Our junior exams provide students with the opportunity to learn to study and to perform under pressure in a relatively low-stakes environment in preparation for the NCEA years that commence in Year 11. They also contribute to our mid-year prizes and prizegiving which will be held early in Term 3 on Monday, 21 July.
Speaking of the school’s vision, we are getting very close to finalising the 2028 Strategic Plan, with feedback on the Draft plan now received from parents, staff and students. The opportunity to give feedback on this draft plan will close at 9 am on Monday 16 June, so please use this form if you wish to provide feedback.
Next week, on Tuesday we are hosting our 2026 Enrolment and Open Evening for prospective Year 9 students and so school will finish at 1:50 pm, with buses running at this time. We have more than 130 current students who are helping on the evening as tour guides and general ambassadors for the school, and we thank them in advance for their active citizenship and support. The Open Evening will run from 4:30 to 7:30 pm, see our website for more details.
With Matariki next Friday, you can expect a shorter newsletter coming out next Thursday and with it being a 9 week term, that means that students only have 9 school days remaining before the term break. Seniors will have lots of internal assessments to complete and juniors will have very important learning off the back of their mid-year exams.
A great newsletter follows with lots more detail and photos from the items outlined above, as well as recognition of Cybella Briscoe, who has achieved her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award - so be sure to have a read. Enjoy the weekend and the opening of our local ski fields.
Ngā mihi nui,

Student Leaders Message
Junior semester 1 exams kicked off on Monday with students taking part in English, Maths, Science and Social Science. These exams provided an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and understanding from the first half of the year. Well done to all students who did their best, for their hard work and positive attitude in this busy time.

On Wednesday our student athletes made the journey down south to Invercargill to take on James Hargest College in our annual sports exchange. Despite the cold and wet conditions our students showed great spirit, resilience and sportsmanship throughout the day. Wakatipu enjoyed strong wins in several fixtures including Senior A Basketball [57 - 51], Girls First XI Football [5-0] and year 9A Netball [30-23]. There were also two hard-fought draws in the Boys First XI Football [2-2] and Girls First XI Hockey [0-0]. Overall James Hargest took control and capitalised, winning the exchange 7-3 although our teams played with determination and pride throughout the day. A huge thank you to the staff and coaches who travelled to support and look after our teams and a massive congratulations to all students who made the early morning trip to Invercargill and participated embracing our schools values and showcasing the Wakatipu way.

Girls First XI Football at the James Hargest Exchange
Four of our netball teams recently competed in the OSS Netball tournament in Dunedin, showcasing great teamwork, determination and sportsmanship. The year 9A team put in a strong performance placing 3rd overall, while the year 10A team finished 4th place in a competitive pool. The Senior B girls claimed a 5th spot finish with the Senior A girls finishing in 6th. Congratulations to all players and coaches for all their hard work and commitment.

This Friday, a group of rakatahi from the kura were lucky enough to volunteer and perform at Haka Tū Haka Ora. Haka Tū Haka Ora is an annual kapa haka competition for all primary schools in the Central Lakes area, with a focus to embrace te ao Māori and draw attention to the Māori culture in Tāhuna. Te Iti O Tāhuna, our school kapa haka group performed as a ngahau rōpū, to inspire future rakatahi to enter kapa haka in high school. It was also a special opportunity for our rakatahi to showcase our new piupiu and to prepare some of our students for Te Hautoka kapa haka regionals in Ōtepoti on Sunday. Me whakahīhī ka tika koutou!

Support Wakatipu High School in the 2025 World Vision 40 Hour Challenge!
From 8pm Friday 13 June to 12pm Sunday 15 June, students from Wakatipu High School are taking on the 40 Hour Challenge to help fight poverty and injustice. This year, we're focusing our efforts on supporting communities in the Solomon Islands, where families are facing the devastating impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels and food insecurity. fundraise.worldvision.org.nz
Whether students are giving up technology, furniture, or sleep, or taking on a personal challenge, they're raising funds and awareness to help tackle poverty and injustice. Some may complete their challenge during the official weekend, while others may do it before or after — but all are accountable to their sponsors to complete the full 40 hours.
Let's live the Wakatipu Way — showing responsibility, resilience, inclusiveness, and striving for excellence beyond the classroom.

Insights from the Women in Business Conference

Today, our Head Student Manuella Sanches Pedrosa delivered an inspiring speech at the Women in Business Conference. Speaking alongside an incredible lineup of female business leaders from across New Zealand, Manuella shared powerful insights about courage and action from a female perspective. Here's an excerpt from her address:
"At times, we don’t step up or step out because we're waiting for permission — to lead, to take space, to want more. But you don’t need permission. You don’t need to wait until you’re perfect or confident. You already have everything in you to begin. You are already enough. Because growth doesn't ask for perfection, it asks for participation. It asks for that first brave step, no matter how small."
Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award

A huge congratulations to Cybella Briscoe for earning her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award—an incredible achievement highlighting her incredible dedication and a wide range of skills.
Cybella achieved this prestigious milestone by completing five rigorous sections:
- Physical Recreation: Rock Climbing
- Skill: Reading
- Service: Volunteering at Frankton Library
- Adventurous Journey: A challenging qualifying journey on the Nydia Track and in Nydia Bay
- Residential Project: Snowboard Instructors Course at Mt Hutt
The Gold Award requires a minimum of 12 months in each of the Voluntary Service, Physical Recreation, and Skills sections, a 4-day/3-night Adventurous Journey, and a 5-day/4-night Residential Project. Participants consistently log progress and have their activities assessed, demonstrating continuous effort and development.
Cybella's journey perfectly highlights the immense benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme. It helps young adults develop important personal qualities like commitment, self-awareness, and determination, while also honing essential skills such as leadership, teamwork, and communication.
Students keen to get involved can read more here or contact our teacher in charge of the Duke of Ed programme, Harriet Hone via hhone@wakatipu.school.nz

Year 12 Hospitality Students Experience Culinary Arts at SIT

Our Year 12 Hospitality class had the exciting opportunity to visit the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) campus at Remarkables Park this week. The purpose of the trip was to introduce students to future training and career pathways in the hospitality industry.
During their visit, students toured SIT’s professional training kitchens and gained valuable insight into the Cheffing and Culinary Arts programmes on offer. The highlight of the day was a hands-on cooking session led by Head Chef Nick, who ran a live demonstration and guided students in preparing a gourmet dish: Sous Vide Salmon with Pickled Cucumber, Saffron Potatoes, Fried Capers, and Mustard Sauce.
The experience was both inspiring and informative, giving students a taste of life in the culinary world and encouraging them to consider further study in hospitality. A big thank you to Linda Richards, Ome Allington, SIT, Glenn Stridiron and Chef Nick Westerman for hosting us and providing such a valuable experience.

Sports and Exercise Science at Site Trampoline
The Health and PE Learning Area would like to thank the team at Site Trampoline for the awesome experience and opportunity our Year 10 Sports and Exercise Science classes had last week to practice a chosen physical skill for improvement. As part of applying knowledge of skill learning principles students had to choose a particular trick to learn, improve and perform over two sessions at Site. Students used their knowledge of stages of learning, skill classification, types of practice and feedback to execute their trick. A huge thank you to Gabe and the instructors at Site for all of their support. All student's skills and confidence improved so much over their sessions!

Bunnings Trade Skills for Teens Programme
One of our community adventures this term, was through a scheme led by the Bunnings activity organisers here in Queenstown. The aim of this programme, is to choose another community organisation and build a project for them that they have requested. The first project the students chose, was to build a BBQ that will be donated to a local school or the QT jump park. We are looking forward to seeing where this will go.

Our final project was to build a dog kennel for the SPCA. The skills, opportunity to use a variety of tools correctly, follow instructions and work towards a meaningful community project, has been very valuable. We would like to thank Denise Trainor and her team at Bunnings QT for the opportunity and for tools they donated to each student. We are looking forward to working with you again.

Māori and Pasifika Otago Uni Visit
During Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa (Samoan Language Week), our tauira at WHS were incredibly fortunate to host the Māori and Pasifika liaisons from the University of Otago. This visit, in support of the broader Kaupapa around Pacific Language Week, provided an invaluable opportunity for our students to explore the diverse educational pathways available to them at Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka, the University of Otago.

The engagement extended far beyond a simple information session. While the liaisons shared crucial insights into university life and academic opportunities, the visit also fostered a significant space for whakawhanaungatanga and nurturing the vā. This emphasis on building relationships allowed the liaisons to genuinely connect with our students, offering guidance and support for their future learning journeys.
Our tauira gained exposure to university academic language and concepts, demystifying the transition to higher education. There was discussion around the various scholarships available. For more information on scholarships and opportunities at the University of Otago, please refer to the key links that were shared with students.

Shotover 360 inspires Senior Business and Tourism Students
Last Friday during Ako time, our Year 12 and 13 Business and Tourism students had the exciting opportunity to participate in Shotover 360, held in the Theatre.
We were privileged to welcome seven passionate members of the Ngāi Tahu Tourism - Shotover Jet team, who shared their personal career journeys and insights into the tourism industry. Each speaker offered a unique perspective, from business management to technical operations, highlighting how diverse and dynamic the tourism sector truly is.
One particularly inspiring story came from a technician who pivoted her career pathway after working towards her PHD in neuroscience. Her journey was a powerful reminder to students that your qualifications don’t have to lock you into a single profession, there are many ways to grow and succeed, especially in industries like tourism that value passion, adaptability, and a wide range of skills.
Throughout the session, students also learned about the core values of Nagi Tahu Tourism—focusing on delivering unforgettable experiences while generating a financial return for the iwi and its members. It was insightful to hear how these values are put into action every day, blending cultural integrity with economic impact.
The Ngāi Tahu Tourism - Shotover Jet team, warmly invited our students to visit and experience a day in the life of their operations. It’s safe to say the session left many of our young learners inspired and eager to explore the endless possibilities within the tourism industry.
A huge thank you to the Ngāi Tahu Tourism - Shotover Jet team, for sharing your stories, your passion, and your time with us!

Dog Agility
Jess Wilkinson and Sarah Taylor competed at the South Island Secondary Schools Dog Agility Championships held recently in Christchurch. Their impressive performance won them the coveted Top Secondary School trophy, which they successfully defended from the previous year.

She also successfully defended her individual agility title and won the open jumpers title, a particularly challenging event where competitors are paired with an unfamiliar dog. Sarah also performed exceptionally well, earning a 2nd and a 3rd place.
Together, Jess and Sarah accumulated an impressive 29 points for the school, significantly outscoring the next closest competitor, with 12 points. The championships featured 39 dog and handler teams representing fifteen different schools, making their victory even more remarkable. Well done Jess and Sarah.

Rockquest
This Saturday we have the Rockquest regional finals in Wānaka. WHS has 9 acts entered in both the solo/duo categories and we wish them all the best.
The event starts at 6 pm at the Lake Wānaka Centre.
TOI Wearable Arts
This week, 36 of our talented TOI Wearable Arts students travelled to Invercargill to take part in an exciting showcase of creativity, storytelling, and fashion as part of the annual Showquest event. The garments, all lovingly handcrafted over many Wednesday afternoons at school, were nothing short of spectacular on stage.
It was a long day, but a truly terrific one. The students presented their work with professionalism, flair, and heart — proudly standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the best designs from across the region. Their support for one another and the inclusiveness shown among all teams created an atmosphere of whanaungatanga and pride.
We were thrilled to see their mahi recognised:
‘Aconite’ won Best Storytelling,
‘Let Them Eat Cake’ took home Innovative Use of Materials and Excellent Garment Construction.
Our students walked away with three awards — an outstanding achievement considering there were over 25 entries.
Special thanks also to our brilliant makeup artists, Ava and Manuella, who worked tirelessly backstage to prepare over 40 stunning hair and makeup looks for both TOI and Showquest. And a big thank you goes to our Showquest team of teachers and students, who supported throughout the day also.
Our TOI students were a credit to the school — creative, collaborative, and a genuine pleasure to work with. We are so proud of all they achieved and can’t wait to see what they create next year.
Kirsten Turner, Alistair Ford and Abbey Brown

Showquest
This week our incredible Showquest team travelled to Invercargill to represent the school at the Southland Regional Showquest competition. Their performance, Disconnect to Reconnect, explored the impact of screen addiction and the importance of reconnecting with the people around us. The performance wowed the judges and captivated the audience, earning an Excellence in Technology award for the creative use of video and lighting to enhance the storytelling.
A huge shoutout to Renee Cottle and Nyah Buckland, our incredible student leaders, whose creativity and vision shaped the choreography and overall direction of the show. Archie Reid and Daniel Clement brought the digital world to life with a brilliantly crafted lighting design that elevated the performance. Luana Kirchoff Pereira added a powerful emotional layer with her moving live vocals, while Ava Weston and Manuella Sanches Pedrosa worked their magic backstage, creating stunning hair and makeup looks that helped the team shine on stage.
We can’t wait to see what they create next year!
