Principal's Message
Kia ora and welcome to the Wakatipu High School newsletter at the start of Term 3 - where we have had a good week to get the term underway. Term 3 is always busy with a combination of teaching, learning and assessment as well as extracurricular activities. Seniors in particular need to be organised and disciplined, including with school exams starting in less than three weeks.
Related, it was great that 90 students and parents attended the Study Skills evening on Tuesday. It sounded like a useful evening, well done to everyone who came along.
A very important process that takes place over the next two weeks is our 2022 course option selection process, where students choose their subjects for next year. This is a very important process for the school (in terms of staffing and the timetable for next year) but also for each and every student. Please see Mr Nathan’s piece below with more info on this - including Option Afternoon next Tuesday.
Also next Tuesday is our ‘Raising Teenagers in Queenstown’ evening which we emailed out about this week. With the Mayor and police presenting, as well as experts in law and sexual health as they relate to youth, this should be a really informative and useful evening and we encourage parents to attend - 7pm in the theatre.
Staying with the theme, and following my piece at the end of last term, there are some very important events and days in the first few weeks of term. Others to note include:
- Junior Mid-year Prizegivings, and Excellence, Ad Alta & Ākonga Passport Assemblies - Monday 9/8
- Accord (NCEA) Teacher Only Day - another of the national days to prepare for NCEA changes, Friday 13/8
- Junior Teacher Only Day - our annual TOD for junior students during senior exams, Friday 20/8
Re the Prizegivings and Assemblies on Monday 9 Aug, details are:
0900 - Year 11 Excellence and Ad Alta Assembly
1000 - Year 9 Mid-year Semester One Prizegiving
1225 - Year 10 Mid-year Semester One Prizegiving
1410 - Year 12/13 Excellence and Ad Alta Assembly
Prizewinners and parents will be notified early next week.
During the holidays you may have seen a piece in the media re bullying at WHS. It was disappointing, including because it contained inaccuracies and omissions which did not present an accurate picture. Bullying is a challenge for schools (notably including online and social media - much of which occurs outside of school) but we do want our students to be safe at school and we do take it seriously. We encourage students to bring any concerns to us, and have a number of channels for them to do that.
A reminder that ‘Suit Up!’, the WHS Foundation Queenstown Marathon Business Challenge to raise funds for the WHSF and the Branches Trust is on - click here to take on the challenge for these great WHS causes! Related, a fun fact re the Foundation: they have now given WHS a total of $1.2m since 2013 - incredible!!
The Phase 2 construction work is continuing well, and this term is status quo for us. There will be some changes and challenges particularly in the first few weeks of next term but I will update you in due course.
A nice newsletter below, including a fantastic sport section with a wrap-up of all the action from the holidays - be sure to check it out. Another reminder to note all the upcoming events and days and get them into your calendars as appropriate.
A very mixed weekend of weather ahead - fingers crossed for snow rather than rain on the hills tomorrow :)

Course Option Afternoon
- 03 Aug 2021
- 3:15 PM to 5:00 PM
The process for selecting course options for 2022 has begun, with Year 11 and Year 12 students having assemblies today and junior students having assemblies early next week.
The selection of 2022 course options needs to be completed by Friday 13 August. This very important process is supported by our annual Option Afternoon which is being held from 3:15 - 5 pm on Tuesday 3 August.
The Option Afternoon provides students and parents the opportunity to discuss and learn more from key teaching staff about the range of course options available for 2022 and supports students to make well informed option choices that support their individual pathways and passions, while also leaving as many doors open as possible for their future.
There will be a short presentation in the theatre from 3:30 - 3:50 pm for parents who would like to better understand the process and gain further insight on how best to support their student to select their 2022 course options.
Information regarding the 2022 option selection process, including detailed information pertaining to the range of course options on offer, is now available through the Schoolpoint’s website: https://wakatipu.schoolpoint.co.nz/
Additionally, parents and students are invited to make an appointment with a member of SLT to discuss course options for 2022 and beyond. This can also be done through the School Interviews website and use the code: 5eas9
https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/
PE Uniforms 5AHPE and 5PEP
A friendly reminder to parents and caregivers of Year 10 students, and parents and caregivers of Year 9 Students taking the 5PEP option. Could you please ensure that your child is prepared with their uniform for Physical Education for their 5AHPE/5PEP course this semester. If students have outgrown their uniform, this can be ordered and purchased through the school website. Students are able to visit Student Services and try on uniform items to find which size they need. Students should be bringing their uniform to wear during each practical lesson of Physical Education.
We understand that on occasion, families may need assistance in meeting the costs of various aspects of school life. WHS operates the Awhi Fund, the Maori word for 'help'. This fund is designed to assist families cover the costs of almost any aspect of school life, such as uniform, 'BYOD' devices, camps and school/extracurricular trips. If your family is struggling with the cost of this uniform you are able to apply for assistance from our Awhi fund, alternatively you can speak with our guidance counsellor for a confidential meeting. The information and form can be found at the following link, https://www.wakatipu.school.nz/finance.html
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me or your child's Physical Education teacher.

Lead Prefect Message
Welcome back to Term 3,
I hope everyone had a good first week back and a relaxing break, whether it consisted of skiing, visiting family or just sleeping in. Term 3 always has a lot happening so make sure you prioritise your needs and to look after yourself both mentally and physically. I suggest everyone tries their best to keep on top of your upcoming school work, extracurriculars and start thinking about studying for mocks. Despite them being called “Mock Exams,” these results become your derived grades if you are unable to sit the exams at the end of the year. And with everything happening over in Australia in regards to COVID19, it is a good reminder to do your best in them.
We had Patrick Sherratt come and speak to students and parents on Tuesday night around how to effectively study and prepare for upcoming exams. The main takeaway from this was to diversify your study such as visualising your notes. He had us visualising the national rugby team performing a haka in our own kitchen to try and show us different techniques for memorisation. He also mentioned the importance of looking after our brains such as remembering to give our brains a break between long study sessions as well as fueling your brain. So make sure you remember to have a glass of water and at least a little bit of breakfast before you go into your exam.
I am sure you have all been watching the Olympics over in Tokyo. It has been very exciting watching our own athletes perform on a world stage with a massive congratulations to Hayden Wilde for a bronze medal in the Men’s triathlon and rowers, Brooke Donoghue and Hannah Osborne, for a silver medal in the women's double sculls, and Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler for a gold medal in the women's coxless pairs. A special mention goes to Erika Fairweather, who is only 17, for her personal best by 4 seconds in the 400m freestyle. I wish all the best to the athletes that still have to compete in the upcoming weeks.
Just a reminder that course selection is coming up this term. It is an important decision that greatly affects your future so ensure that you are making the right decision for yourself in order to both be able to achieve your ambitions but also learn about subjects you enjoy.
Good luck to everyone who is attending Model UN in Wanaka tonight and have a great rest of your time at school this year.

Environmental Council - Wilding Pines
If you have a look at the hills around the Wakatipu Basin you may notice the new tree felling.
The trees that are being cut down are wilding conifer pines. Wilding pines are a big problem in the basin for a few reasons. Firstly wilding pines are spread when the wind carries the seeds onto different hills and start consuming hill sides. Secondly when wilding pines spread over hill sides they steal sunlight, water, and room for the natives to grow. Thirdly they can be a very big risk to wildfires and since they spread and grow close to each other. Lastly the spread of wilding pines means that we are losing valuable vegetation or farming land.
Fortunately there are a few ways you can help reduce the wilding pines.
- Go to a local chop. This is where you can meet with the community on a weekend day to walk up to the hills where you chop down the pines.
- After they chop down the pines you need to re-plant natives to take the place of the pines or they will spread back there. This is where you can volunteer to do native planting days.

Term 3 is always jam packed full of sport. Some winter competitions are beginning to wrap up, while other secondary school ones are getting under way. We have seven teams preparing for winter tournament week this year, which is the pinnacle event for secondary school teams. Congratulations to those that have been selected to represent WHS at these competitions.
South Island Secondary School Junior Netball Champs
The WHS 9A and 10A netball teams competed at the Junior South Island Secondary School Champs in Christchurch early in the holiday break. This annual tournament is a great way for schools to measure themselves, play a wide range of teams and for junior players to embrace tournament life, often for the first time, with plenty of learning and fun. This year both our teams did well claiming some big scalps and finishing in the top third of their competitions, the Year 10's finished 10th and the Year 9's finished 12th. These are awesome results. A huge thank you to our awesome coaches; 9A - Cam Murphy, Lisa Murphy and manager Rachel Middleton and 10A - Sally Bulling, Rebekah Harp and manager Cordelia Burgess. New Zealand Secondary School Swim Champs
Year 12 student Jacob Marriott was the sole WHS representative at the NZ Secondary Schools Swimming Championships, held from 22-25 July at the National Aquatic Centre on Auckland’s North Shore. Over 700 athletes attended from over 150 schools. Jacob competed in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley, achieving strong personal bests in all events and placing 7th in the 200m back, matching his national ranking. A perfect lead into next month’s New Zealand Short Course Championships, where he has qualified for all four events. Well done Jacob!
Southland Table Tennis Champs
12 players (four teams) travelled to Invercargill Table Tennis Stadium to play in the Southland Table Tennis championships during the last week of Term 2. The boys realised very quickly that this was a step up in class with some well drilled teams from James Hargest, Southland Boys, Fiordland College and Aurora College. Game of the day involved Wakatipu 2 (Daniel Davies, Daniel Jeffery and Jude Deaker) against Fiordland College. All seven matches were close 2-1 encounters with the favourite score being 14-12 and with lots of entertaining rallies. Fiordland just edged the result and went on to take second place overall. The two 'Daniels' are talented players for Year 9's and a big thanks to Jude for being a last minute replacement for an injured player.
Wakatipu 1 (Thisanka Weeraddana, Ethan Mendoza and Ronil Prasad) were the most successful team coming 7th overall. Both Thisanka and Ethan ended up with five wins for the day.
Big shout out to Wakatipu 4 (Jayden King, Shane Milley and DV Manwani), first tournament for Jayden and Shane who impressed with three wins a piece.
Finally Wakatipu 3 (Rohil Prasad, Mason Xu and Rowan Liu), not many wins during the day but played the games in great spirit with big smiles all day.
The boys were great ambassadors for the school and it was great to see them playing practice matches against the other competitors in between games. Lastly, a big thanks to the Milley family for being the main support, it was a long day!
E-Sports Team - South Island Runners Up
The WHS E-Sports team competed in the South Island regional finals last night against Christchurch Boys High School 1. Unfortuntaley the team suffered their first loss in the Valorant league. This has been WHS's first foray into E-Sports and there was a huge amount of interest at the Semester 2 Expo on Wednesday so watch this space!
Karate
Congratulations to Mackenzi Jackson who competed at the New Zealand Karate Cup in Auckland over the holidays. Mackenzi finished second in the 16-17 years Kata. Mackenzi also obtained her black belt, great stuff!

Girls Rugby through to Central Otago Final
For the first time ever WHS will feature in the Central Otago Secondary School Girls rugby competition final. It has been very exciting to see how well this team has progressed in the last two years and we cannot wait to see them take on Dunstan High School in Alex next week. Ka Mauka Whakatipu!
Central Otago Boys Football Competition
This week a new secondary school competition got underway for Boys Football in Central Otago, which is an exciting development. WHS has entered two teams in this and these two teams played each other on the oval at the Event Centre yesterday in round one of the competition. After a close first half, 3-2 to the 1sts, the 1sts stormed home to a 10-2 win. An exciting new chapter for secondary school boys football in our region! Games will be primarily played in Cromwell, like the girls competition. This is a great build up for tournament week and a solid development pathway for our younger players.
Semester 2 Expo
On Wednesday we held a semester two mini expo for the first time. This promoted upcoming summer sports as well as physical activity opportunities like yoga, Strength 101 and new sports like moto cross and water polo that are now available for students to get involved in. Kingpin is Coming to Queenstown!! and is looking for students to full the following roles
Some info on our roles;
Our Guest Service Agents are the first impression of our venue. Typically stationed at “reception” these team members greet our guests and book them in/process their online booking. For our team members in this area, having sound organisational skills is highly advantageous. Being our venue’s first impression, there are extra bonus points for a little extra charisma. This will suit students looking for some hours after school on week days and of course weekends.
Our Arcade Attendants are going to feel as though they are in a bit of a wonderland. These roles will suit varying skill sets from the visually creative to the technically savvy. We train the team to repair level 1 and 2 faults on our games so they can be up and running again as quickly as possible. Should any of your students fancy themselves a “gamer” they may find they are a natural in here. The team also tend to our Winners Vault which houses a huge range of prizes, this is where students with a keen creative eye will thrive. The display’s in these vaults are eye catching and maintaining this requires constant attention and adjustment. The team will also manage the transaction of prize purchases with tickets won in the arcade – all digital. These hours are also available after school on weekdays and then weekends.
Drama students come alive with our Party Host roles. Each party is run by 1, sometimes 2 dedicated hosts to create an unforgettable experience. Team members get to be big kids for the day, playing the games and keeping the vibe high – ensuring the parents don’t have to lift a finger. This position is almost entirely weekend work.
We are encouraging those looking for their first job as well as those looking to launch a career. From any of these positions, we will be looking to develop team members into Supervisors and Duty Managers. We will endeavour to upskill in leadership and business management, working to KPI’s to achieve targets and objectives. We are a large company with many avenues for our growth.
The current advert does call for cash handling experience but this is not necessary if coming through the pathway of Wakatipu High School.
If interested please make contact with Rachel Reilly - rachel.reilly@kingpinplay.com
